‘Dil Kaa Heera’ (1979) was produced by Manian and V Lakshamanan and was directed by Dulal Guha. The cast included Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sachin, Abhi Bhattacharya, Prakash Gill, Nandita Bose, Agha, Pinchoo Kapoor, Satyen Kappu, Brahmachari, Jagdish Raj, Sanjana, Ratna etc.

Pinchoo Kapoor (C. 1927 – 28 April 1989) plays the role of the mastermind of a smuggling ring in the film. He was born in Rawalpindi as Pushpendra Kapoor in a wealthy family which was earlier based in Jaipur. The family shifted back to Jaipur on the eve of partition where he completed his graduation. Having interesting in acting, Pinchoo Kapoor joined All India Radio, Jaipur and acted in amateur theatres.

After working in theatres, Pinchoo Kapoor became interested in acting in films. He landed in Mumbai on the advice of his cousin, Shashi Kapoor and initially stayed with Prithviraj Kapoor. Pinchoo Kapoor appears to have got minor roles in ‘Apraadhi Kaun’ (1957) and ‘Yahudi’ (1958) without being credited. He got his first credited role in James Ivory film, ‘Householder’ (1963) in which Shashi Kapoor and Leela Naidu were in lead roles. His next was once again James Ivory’s ‘Shakespeare-Waalah (1965).

Pinchoo Kapoor’s real take-off in Hindi films started with the beginning of 1970s during which he worked in some of the landmark films like ‘Bobby’ (1973), ‘Roti’ (1974), ‘Hera Pheri’ (1976), ‘Don’ (1978) ‘Karz’ (1980) etc. In the 1980s, he was prominently noticed in ‘Meri Aawaaz Suno’ (1981), ‘Khuddaar’ (1982), ‘Avtaar’ (1983), Sharaabi’ (1984), ‘Nagina’ (1985), ‘Tamas’ (1988) etc. During his two decades of acting career, Pinchoo Kapoor acted in over 200 films mostly in the aristocratic and affluent roles – like an authoritarian father, a boss, the business tycoon, the police commissioner, politician, lawyer etc. Even his roles as antagonists was always in sophisticated mold. He had a great screen presence even in small roles.

In many films, his roles, especially of an aristocratic and strict father or a business tycoon get sudden heart attacks when things does not work out as per his wishes. Sadly, on April 28, 1989, he passed away due to a massive heart attack. One can gauge how busy Pinchoo Kapoor was when more than a dozen films got released after his death for which Chetan Shashital dubbed his dialogues.

The film under discussion became available for watching only about 4 months back on a video sharing platform. The film’s story is about an honest custom officer who has become a stumbling block for a smuggling ring to smuggle diamonds in India. So, they find out the weak points in his immediate relations – his beloved who is an air hostess and his younger brother who is swayed by imported items for which he requires money. It turns out later that the honest custom officer is surrounded by criminals in his own house as well as his beloved’s brother-in-law in Singapore. Now the question is what the custom officer will do – protect or prosecute them. The story in detail is as under:

Rajat Sharma (Dharmendra) is an honest and upright custom officer who is a widower and lives with his minor son, Munna and a college-going younger brother, Kundan (Sachin). At the time of the death, his wife had given the responsibility of looking after Munna to her close friend, Roopa (Hema Malini) who is an airhostess and stays in the same apartment as that of Rajat. Rajat and Roopa like each other and they are planning to get married. Everything is going on very well for Rajat except that he is bit worried about Kundan’s craze for imported goods which Rajat is not fulfilling for obvious reason. So, Kundan wants to earn money so that he can have that luxuries.

Dinesh Patel (Pinchoo Kapoor) runs a diamond smuggling ring. Ever since Rajat has been posted as a custom officer, his smuggling operations have been considerably affected. After realising that Rajat cannot be influenced by the offer of big money, Dinesh gets to know the family background of Rajat which he finds interesting. He finds an opportunity to exploit Rajat’s family members for his smuggling business insulating him from the custom officer’s surveillance. As a first step, Dinesh gets acquaint with Rajat and his family when one day he offers them the lift in his car when the family is struck on returning from the picnic due to non-availability of buses. Dinesh drops them to their residence.

Roopa gets her duties as airhostess on Chennaii-Singapore-Chennai flights. She is happy about it as she can meet her married sister, Seema (Nandita Bose) and her husband, Gupta (Abhi Bhattacharya) who are based in Singapore. On her return journey, Gupta gives her a doll for Munna and a wrist watch for Kundan. After a couple of days, the doll gets lost. On her second flight, Gupta gives her toy jeep since the earlier doll given by him was lost. Even the toy jeep gets missing. On her next flight, Roopa finds Seema in some kind of tension. When she is about to reveal her, Gupta comes with a toy helicopter in lieu of the lost toy jeep which he hands over to Roopa and drops her at the airport.

Despite the reliable information that the diamonds are being smuggled from Singapore and the custom officers have not been able to catch anyone from the Singapore flights, Rajat’s boss, Satyendra (Satyen Kapoor) is unhappy. He puts Rajat on duty to screen every passenger from Singapore who put all the passengers including pilots and airhostesses for custom clearance. But no smuggles goods are found with any passengers. Roopa returns home and shows the toy helicopter to Munna. However, accidentally, the toy helicopter breaks from which diamonds spill over on the floor. Roopa closes the door and hurriedly collects all the diamonds with the intention of throwing them in the sea as she can be misunderstood as the career of smuggled diamonds by Rajat.

While Roopa is leaving the house, Kundan meets her on the staircase and finds her in some kind of panic. He follows Roopa at the sea shore and finds her throwing the diamonds. She reveals what has happened and he reveals what he has been doing – picking the doll and toys from the house and delivering the same to one of the associates of Dinesh against some remuneration. He is now worried that his life is in danger as he will not be able to deliver the diamonds this time. Both are also worried as to how they will face Rajat.

One of the smuggler’s ring members calls Kundan as to why he did not handover the diamonds from toy helicopter to which he says that Roopa threw this in the sea when she came to know about it. The goon threatens to kill him if the diamonds are not delivered within next 24 hours. Roopa hears their conversations. Just to save Kundan, Roopa has no option but to succumb to smuggler’s blackmail to continue to bring diamonds concealed in toys and dolls for them in her every flight from Singapore to Mumbai. She tells Rajat that she is thinking of resigning her job of airhostess after her next flight to Singapore and back to look after Munna and Kundan. Rajat is surprised but agrees with her decision.

In the custom office, Satyendra is surprised that in spite of the diamond being smuggled out of the last flight from Singapore, those diamonds have not entered the market. He suspects that something fishy is going on. Rajat promises that he would smash the smuggler’s ring after putting in place the strict surveillance. Roopa reaches Singapore and as usual, Gupta receives her at the airport. She enquires with him from where he is buying toys and dolls which he had gifted to her. Gupta reveals his identity as the Singapore-based member of Dinesh Patel’s smuggling operations. He says that it would be the interest of all that she does not disclose anything about their operations. Otherwise, it would reflect the integrity of Rajat as a honest and upright custom officer. He arranges her meeting with Dinesh who produces album containing her photographs talking to his smuggling gang members which can be a proof that she is also associated with the diamond smuggling business.

Caught in a pitiable circumstances, Roopa is forced to carry smuggled diamonds concealed in dolls and toys from Singapore and Kundan is required to deliver the same to Dinesh. One day, Rajat finds a single diamond lying his sofa’s base in the house. Rajat gets a clue. In the next flight arriving from Singapore to Chennai, he stops Roopa for a special custom check and takes her in an interrogation room where he finds diamonds in two dolls she had brought from Singapore. He reports the matter to his boss Satyendra who fails to get any satisfactory response from Roopa except that she is innocent. Satyendra arrests her and she is shifted to a lock-up.

Rajat returns home extremely sad that his integrity as a honest custom officer is at stack when he is surrounded by criminals in his own family. There is a further shock for him as he finds that his maid servant is killed and Munna has been kidnapped and taken to Singapore. Now the life of Munna is at risk. He gets approval from his boss to pursue the gang in Singapore. Satyendra sends Roopa and another custom officer (Brahmachari) in disguise with Rajat to identify the persons involved with the modus operandi of diamond smuggling.

Once in Singapore, the story follows the usual Bollywood climax of the action-thriller films of the 1980s. Rajat comes to know the involvement of Gupta, the brother-in-law pf Roopa. He confronts with the combines forces of Dinesh, Gupta, Manoharlal and others. There are car chase, boat chase and even an helicopter that is used in the fight. Finally, gang is cornered and Munna is freed from their captivity. With the help of the Singapore Police, they are all taken into custody after which they are handed over to Rajat and his team to take them to India. Rajat is promoted at a higher grade in the custom office. But despite his power to reduce the prison term of Kundan to a bare minimum, being a juvenile, Rajat does not exercise that power by saying that his full imprisonment will make him a better citizen.

The film had six songs written by Anand Bakshi which were set to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The film makes its debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘zindagee kaa youn zubaan par naam aana chaahiye’ rendered by Asha Bhosle, Amit Kumar and Mohammed Rafi who sings for Hema Malini, Sachin and Dharmendra, respectively.

The context of the song is that Kundan (Sachin) wants to go on a family picnic to a beach while Rajat says that they have to spent time in a park so that Munna can enjoy the toy train ride. All of them sing the song during their picnic which ends at a beach. The lyrics of the song rendered on the screen by Hema Malini, Sachin and Dharmendra convey their respective ideas of enjoyment.
