Today’s song is the last and final song from a ” Lost and Found” type of film – Nehle pe Dehla-1976.

The film was made by Ajanta Arts, Bombay, a banner owned by the actor Sunil Dutt. The film was directed by Raj Khosla and music was by R.D.Burman (4 songs) and Aziz Nazan (1 Naat). The lyricist was Anand Bakshi. The cast of the film included Sunil Dutt, Saira Banu, Vinod Khanna, Bindu, Ranjit, Premnath, Om Prakash, Kamini Kaushal, Anwar Hussain, Trilok Kapoor, Tiwari, Bharat Bhushan and many more.

The decades of the 1970 and 1980 were full of “Lost and Found” films. The leading and the most successful was Manmohan Desai, of course, but even the others tried to use the success formula, like today’s film. All films of this type had a more or less same pattern of stories. Surprisingly, the audience was not tired to see and they enjoyed such films heartily !

The 1976 film scene was, however, opposite to what happened in 1975. While the year 1975 gave best entertainers in mainstream cinema like Sholey, Deewar, Julie, Rafoo Chakkar, Dharam karam and Jai Santoshi Maa and also in parallel cinema like Chhotisi Baat, Geet gaata chal, Nishant and Mausam; compared to 1975, the year 1976 was dull with only a few good films like Dus Numbari, Kabhi Kabhi, Laila Majnu, Hera Pheri, Nagin, Chitchor etc.

Film kabhi kabhi projected Amitabh as an intense lover – contrary to his developed image of being an Angry Young man.

Laila Majnu was the story of films right from the Silent era, made in 1922 by Madon Theatres, Calcutta and in 1927made by Excelrsior Films, Bombay. In Talkie films Laila Majnu was made by 2 film companies in 1931 itself and later in 1945, 1953, 1954, 1976 and 1984. among all these the best was Laila Majnu made in 1976 featuring Rishi kapoor and Ranjita. Songs tuned by Madan Mohan became popular.

Subhash Ghai’s first directorial venture ‘Kalicharan’ was instrumental in converting Shatrughna Sinha from a Villain to a Hero. This was the best film of Reena Roy.

Basu Chaterjee’s film Chitchor was a Hit film, but Dilip-Saira’s Bairag did not shine much. Hera Pheri was full of action and Comedy. South Indian film Maa had many animals supporting Human actors. Naagin became a superhit film. Film Sankoch was also based on Sharat Babu’s story like film Parineeta-1953.

New Wave film Manthan by Shyan Benegal was on Milk Cooperatives Movement. Another film Mrigaya by Mrinal Sen introduced Mithun Chakravarti, who won the Best actor’s National Film award.

In 1976 the Government separated Doordarshan and Akashvani. Nahata’s film “Kissa Kursi Ka” was burnt by the angry mob in one Delhi hall. The movie got banned at that time. Deaths of Ritwik Ghatak, Jaan Nissar Akhtar and singer Mukesh took place.

The 1976 Bollywood masala film Nehle Pe Dehla follows a classic “lost and found” revenge storyline:

The story begins with a righteous police inspector who actively targets a powerful crime ring. A ruthless kingpin smuggler, known as the General (played by Prem Nath), retaliates by murdering the police officer. In the chaos that follows, the inspector’s two teenage sons, Ram and Rahim, are separated from each other and their family. The elder brother vows to one day find the killer and avenge his father’s death.

Years pass, and the two brothers grow up under different circumstances, both turning to a life of crime as thieves. Eventually, Ram (Sunil Dutt) and Rahim (Vinod Khanna) cross paths and form a partnership, remaining completely unaware of their true biological brotherhood.

With the help of a judo instructor named Beena (Saira Banu), the duo begins systematically targeting the smuggling syndicate run by the General and his henchmen, Alberto (Ranjeet) and Filomina (Bindu). As they dismantle the criminal empire, the truth of their past is revealed. Reunited as brothers, Ram and Rahim successfully avenge their father’s murder and bring down the General’s gang.

One of the names in the cast is Kamini Kaushal. Many younger generation readers may not know much about Kamini Kaushal ( real name-Uma Kashyap. From24-2-1927 to 14-11-2025) was the daughter of a very learned Botany Professor. She had 2 brothers and 2 sisters. The eldest brother was a Surgeon and the younger was in the Army.. The family was highly educated and sophisticated in Lahore. Because of Chetan Anand, she acted in Neecha Nagar-1946. Then she shifted to Bombay to look after her sister’s 2 daughters as sister had died in a serious car accident. Later she was married to her Brother in Law,Mr. B S Sood.

Starting with Jail yatra,Do Bhai,Aag,Shaheed,Nadiya ke paar etc, she acted in over 60 films in 40 years.

During the filming of Shaheed and Nadiya ke Paar-48, she fell in love with Dilip Kumar. They decided to get married too, but one day her brother,Col. A N Kashyap came on the sets and with a Pistol, threatened her to stop her affair with Dilip Kumar. Scared, she also remembered her promise to her dying sister and her 2 daughters. From that date,Kamini ended the affair permanently.

Later she took a break from films and went abroad with family. She also delivered a baby Boy,Rahul,in this break period. In 1963, she started with “Godaan” again but switched to character roles. Her last film was in 2007. She engaged herself in Children’s film society work after that. She was one of the oldest actresses till 2025.

By the beginning of 1970s, Mythological films were replaced by T.V.Serials on Mythology and the regular actors of this genre of films had to work in whatever films were available. Once a very popular, famous and much in demand actor was Trilok Kapoor-known for his roles of Bhagwan Shankar. He was also in today’s cast.

TK (Trilok Kapoor) was born at Multan on 3-3-1912 and was educated at Peshawar. He went to Bombay to join his brother. He got his first film CHAR DARVESH-1933. He went to Calcutta and did some films there. He also worked as an assistant to Director Hem Chandra.

Trilok was associated with the activities of the freedom movement from a very young age. His elder sibling had already moved to Calcutta to make a career in films in the latter part of 1920s. The year was 1932. There was a large rally held in Multan, advocating prohibition against liquor. The rally turned violent, resulting in the death of some people. Trilok Kapoor was also at the rally. His father, fearing for his son’s life, wrote to Prithviraj in Calcutta, to desist young Trilok from participation in such violent movements. He also implored him to have his younger brother join him in Calcutta. Under family duress, Trilok left Multan and joined his elder brother in Calcutta in early 1933. It was natural for him to start working in films, under guidance from his elder brother. His first screen appearance is a small role he played alongside his elder brother, in the film ‘Seeta’. He also worked as an assistant to producer-director Hem Chander for some years. He played small roles in about ten films during his stay in Calcutta.

During the late 1930s, Prithviraj migrated to Bombay, and Trilok also moved with him. Immediately on arrival in Bombay, he got associated with Ranjeet Movietone. His career got a fillip when he got associated with Vijay Bhatt. In the 1940s, Vijay Bhatt had become a household name with the release of films based on Ramayan, viz. ‘Bharat Milap’ (1942) and ‘Ram Rajya’ (1943). The interesting thing to happen was that through these films, Trilok Kapoor got so much typecast in the role of Bhagwan Shiv, that well through the 1940s and 1950s, every producer wanted him to play that role only. His pairing with Nirupa Roy in the role of Mata Parvati became a staple feature of religious films in those years. His film ‘Har Har Mahadev’ celebrated a diamond jubilee in Bombay, and golden jubilee in many other centers.

In the 40s and 50s, His patent role was that of Mahadev. Trilok Kapoor was very famous for his portrayal of Shiv ji in Mythological films, in which he paired with Nirupa Roy as his consort-Parvati. He did 7 films in a row for this role and in all those films Nirupa Roy was Parvati. (However, no one could ever beat the divine pair of Ram and Seeta enacted by Shobhana Samarth and Prem Adib in Ram Rajya-1943).

It was rumoured that Trilok Kapoor wore a real snake around his neck during shootings. In the shooting of Har Har Mahadev, Nirupa Roy was scared of the real snake and she could not do any scene with Trilok ji. Finally, he had to remove the real snake and wear an artificial snake for this shooting.

He and Nirupa Roy worked in 18 films together. Nirupa Roy paired with some actors more than others. She acted with Balraj Sahni in 12 films, with P.Jairaj in 16 films and with Ashok Kumar in 21 films. She was Amitabh’s mother in 12 films, overall Mythological films were 50, Mother’s role in 50 films, suffering wife in 30 films and believe it or not, she acted in 8 Stunt films also.

Trilok Kapoor did about 120 films. In a career that lasted a little over five decades, Trilok Kapoor performed in more than 120 films, mostly small roles. Besides the religious films, the high point of his career was his lead appearance opposite Noorjehan in the film ‘Mirza Sahiban’ (1947). His last film was a TV film Akanksha, which was released after his death which took place on 23-9-1988.

Here is the last and final song from today’s film, sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This makes the film YIPPEED !

Song- Mashooq apne shabaab mein(Nehle Pe Dehla)(1976) Singer- Lata Mangeshkar, Lyricist- Anand Bakshi, MD- R.D.Burman

Lyrics :

maashooq apne shabaab mein
karte hain parda hijaab mein
kaisa zamaana aaya dekho
ke dekho aashiq khade hain naqaab mein
ho maashooq apne shabaab mein
karte hain parda hijaab mein
kaisa zamaana aaya dekho
ke dekho aashiq khade hain naqaab mein

dekho zara sharmeele balam ko
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
dekho zara sharmeele balam ko
yoon dekhta hai mua ghoonghat se humko
jee chaahta hai hum is sharam ko
ho jee chaahta hai hum is sharam ko
pee len mila kar sharaab mein
pee len mila kar sharaab mein
kaisa zamaana aaya dekho
ke dekho aashiq khade hain naqaab mein

kya ho gaya hai inko na jaane
na jaane
haaye
kya ho gaya inko na jaane
tasveeron jaise chup hain deewaane
humne diye hain kitne hee taane
haan humne diye hain kitne hee taane
kuchh to kaho tum jawaab mein
jee haan
kuchh to kaho tum jawaab mein
kaisa zamaana aaya dekho
ke dekho aashiq khade hain naqaab mein

aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa
ab kam apna ye kar rahe hain
naazuk haseenon se dar rahe hain
maare sharam ke ye mar rahe hain
socha na thha ye khawaab mein
socha na thha ye khawaab mein
kaisa zamaana aaya dekho
ke dekho aashiq khade hain naqaab mein
ho ho maashooq apne shabaab mein
karte hain parda hijaab mein
kaisa zamaana aaya dekho
ke dekho aashiq khade hain naqaab mein
