Sometime in early 1980s, Naveen Nischol produced a film, ‘Jaan Se Pyaara’ under his banner, Navin Films for which he entrusted his younger brother, Praveen Nischol to direct the film. After completing shooting of seven reels of the film, the project was shelved due to financial problems. In between, Praveen Nischol was also working as manager for Naveen Nischol.
Parveen Nischol shifted his focus on TV Serials and produced ‘Shrikant’ for Doordarshan with the cast of Farooque Shaikh, Sujata Mehta, Priyadarshini and Bharat Bhushan with Jaidev as the music director. ‘Shrikant’ became a highly successful TV serial. The story of the film is as under:
Gopal Mayur (Shah Rukh Khan), a UK citizen of Indian origin runs one of biggest business houses in the UK. He has two sons, Hari Mayur (Shah Rukh Khan) and younger son, Vikram Mayur (Shah Rukh Khan). While Hari is a pilot by his hobby and has a deep affection for India being his ancestors’ country, Vikram is like his father Gopal who has a negative view about India and is proud to be called a British citizen.
One day, Hari escapes from London by his private plane to India to avoid marrying a British girl as per his father’s choice. The plane crashes in Arabian Sea off Mumbai. Hari is found unconscious at the shore off Mumbai coast by Bijuriya. Her elder sister, Kajuriya (Rajeshwari) takes care of him to bring him back to normal. One day, Hari hears a radio news that since the UK authorities failed to get Hari’s body, he has been presumed dead. Hari regards this as a great news for him as this has given him an opportunity to start his new life in India.
Hari gets married to Kajuriya. Soon she is pregnant with Hari’s child. During the celebration of Deewaali festival, Kajuriya’s house engulfs in fire in which Hari and Kajuriya die after sustaining serious burn injuries. Before death, Kajuriya delivers a baby boy and is taken care by Bijuriya with the help of her neighbours.
Eight years have passed since the death of Hari and Kajuriya. In London, Vikram has taken charge of his father’s business empire after his father’s death. In Mumbai, Bijuriya (Sonali Bendre) becomes a bar dancer to take care of herself and the child, Nandu (Sunny Singh). Madadgaar (Saeed Jaffrey), a lawyer-friend of late Hari watches an interview of Vikram and gets an idea to force Vikram to visit India to take back with him both Nandu and Bijuriya to London. He files a case against Vikram of cheating by falsely claiming the death of his elder brother, Hari.
Vikram is confused by the lawyers claim. If Nandu is Hari’s son, than he becomes the next in line in the Mayur family. So, he decides to visit India to have a direct talk with Bijuriya so that he can take custody of Nandu and take him back to London. Vikram arrives in India to meet Bijuriya first before he decides to claim Nandu legally. But Bijuriya does not want to part with Nandu being affectionately attached to him since his birth. At the same time, she knows that she cannot legally stop Vikram from claiming Nandu. So, at the time of her first meeting with Vikram, she pretends as from a royal family who has wherewithal to be the guardian of Nandu.
With her high voltage ‘drama’ of a queen from a royal family, Vikram develops soft corner for Bijuriya. But the façade cannot continue for long as Bijuriya’s real vocation is exposed when he goes in a beer bar for a drink where he finds Bijuriya giving her dance performance. At the same time, he also comes to know that Nandu who has met him doing his petty works like shoe shining, buying him a cigarette packet etc is in reality, his nephew, whom he calls now as Master Mayur. Bijuriya has no option but to send Nandu every day to visit his uncle as per the court order. Gradually, Nandu gets used to his luxurious experiences while he is with Vikram in his five-star hotel room. While Nandu is very much influenced by his potential luxurious life in London, he has only one condition to fulfil before he goes to London with his uncle. And his wish is to get Bijuriya married.
Lawyer, Madadgaar’s main aim is to ensure that Nandu does go with Vikram to London for his well settled life which he is legitimately entitled to as a scion of Mayur family. At the same time, he also knows that Bijuriya will never allow Vikram to do so because of her motherly attachment to Nandu. So, Madadgaar plays a trick with both Bijuriya and Vikram by saying them separately that Vikram has fallen in love with Bijuriya and vice versa. His idea is to bring them together as a couple so that Bijuriya can also accompany Vikram along with Nandu to London. But instead of serving Lawyer’s intended purpose of uniting them together, Vikram and Bijuriya take this opportunity to facilitate to retain/claim Nandu by falsely pretending to be in love with each other.
Bijuriya invites Vikram to join her at a Beer Bar for her dance performance in order to give a signal to Vikram that she is interested in him. Vikram on the other hand arranges with local goons to fake the kidnap of Bijuriya after her dance performance during which he would save her from the ‘kidnappers’ so that she has a soft corner for him. But Vikram does not know that his fake kidnapping plan has been sabotaged by a local goon, Bheema Khalsi (Kiran Kumar) who has an infatuation with Bijuriya for a long time. He offers his gang more money to actually kidnap Bijuriya.
As planned, after the dance performance, Bijuriya is kidnapped by the goons. Vikram follows the kidnappers and stops their vehicle. Instead of the ‘fake’ fight, Vikram really get beating from the goons. Somehow, he overpowers the goons and gets Bijuriya freed from kidnappers. So, both of them continue indulging as fake loving couple without each other’s knowledge. But Nandu is shocked to know that Vikram has no intention of marrying Bijuriya. His intention is to take him back to London to as a scion of Mayur family. Nandu runs away and does not return to his house. A worried Bijuriya visits Vikram’s hotel and asks him where he has kept Nandu. He gives a long sermon to Bijuriya and charges that her vocation as a bar dancer has made Nandu like a matured elderly person worrying about her marriage for which he has been undertaking petty work to save money for her marriage.
Bijuriya returns home and finds from Nandu’s personal belongings that what Vikram said has turned out to be correct. She scolds Nandu out of frustration and for the first time she reveals him that when he was born, his parent had passed away. It is Bijuriya who has taken care of him since his infancy. Nandu is also upset that Bijuriya whom he considered as her mother is now treating him as something she has done a favour. He runs back to hotel and reveals what has happened. Vikram assures him that he will make good whatever expenses she has incurred in bringing up Nandu.
After few days, Vikram visits Bijuriya’s house with a legal documents that she will have no rights over Nandu after being paid sufficient compensation in cash for bringing up Nandu. She hesitantly signs the documents. The very next day, she sends in a bag containing the personal belongings of Nandu through Madadgaar.
Madadgaar hands over the bag to Vikram as he leaves with Nandu to board the flight to London. At the last moment, Nandu does not wants to travel. Instead, he wants to return to Bijuriya and runs away from the boarding gate. Vikram follows him during which the bag falls spilling its contents on the floor which include, apart from the personal belongings of Nandu, the cash amount which Vikram has given to Bijuriya. Things become clear to Vikram that Bijuriya was not interested in his money.
Vikram and Nandu return to find that Bijuriya has gone to give her dance performance exclusive for Bheema Khalasi after which he attempts to rape her. Vikram fights with his goons and frees her from the clutches of Bheema Khalasi after he gets killed in the fight. The events happened during the last few days have convinced Vikram that Nandu and Bijuriya cannot be separated.
The film ends with Vikram’s grandmother along with other family members from London attending the marriage ceremony of Vikram with Bijuriya.
The film had seven songs written by Yogesh (6) and Rani Malik (1) which were set to music by Nikhil-Vinay (Nikhil Kamath – Vinya Tiwari). The film makes its debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘deewaana main teraa deewaanaa’ rendered by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik and singing for Shah Rukh Khan and Sonali Bendre, respectively. The song is written by Yogesh.
The context of the song is that Vikram (Shah Rukh Khan) wants to take back to London, his nephew Nandu (Sunny Singh). But Bijuriya (Sonali Bendre) who had brought up Nandu does not want to give back to Vikram out of her attachment to him. Lawyer Madadgaar (Saeed Jaffrey) works out a trick to make both Vikram and Bijuriya to become closer. They do become closer with their own agenda with a view to retaining/claiming Nandu. In that process, Bijuriya invites Vikram to join her in a dance performance during which she is kidnapped by goons. Vikram fights with the goons and get Bijuriya freed. The song follows as a part of expressing their fake love for each other.
