‘Sanam Harjaai’ (1995) was produced and directed by Saawan Kumar who also wrote the story. The cast included Himanshu (debut), Saadhika (debut), Simran (debut), Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Reema Lagoo, Shiva, Pinky, Suhas Joshi, Yunus Pervez, Anil Nagrath, etc. The film was majorly shot in New Zealand.

Saawan Kumar Tak (09/08/1936 – 25/08/2022) left Jaipur, his birth place, for Mumbai sometime in 1965 with a view to becoming an actor. But after he got rejected at the screen tests, he decided to become a producer with a story he has written for his first film, ‘Naunihal’ (1967). His brother-in-law (his sister’s husband) helped him financing the film. He introduced Hari Jariwala in this film with a screen name of Sanjeev Kumar. The film was directed by Raj Marbros. Though the film failed at the box office, it earned a Presidential Mention in the National Film Award for Saawan Kumar. This is the only film in his career which he produced but did not direct. Rest of his films which he produced was directed by him.

Saawan Kumar directed his first film, ‘Gomti Ke Kinaare’ (1972) which he also produced and wrote the story. This was Meena Kumari’s last film to be released. ‘Hawas’ (1974) was his first box office hit film for which Ameen Sayani wrote the dialogues for his only film. This was also Saawan Kumar’s first film for which Usha Khanna was the music director. This film resulted in their marriage which lasted seven years. Even after they got separated, their friendship and professional relationship continued till Saawan Kumar passed away. She was the music director for his 10 films out of 18 films he produced and directed after ‘Hawas’ (1974).

Saawan Kumar produced and directed box office hit films like, ‘Saajan Bin Suhaagan’ (1978), ‘Souten’ (1983), and ‘Sanam Bewafa’ (1989). In all, he produced/directed 20 films between 1967 to 2006. ‘Saawan – The Love Season’ (2006) which bore his name, was his last film as a producer-director-writer-lyricist.

The gist of the film’s story is as under:

The film has a dark story with a distressing and a sinister pre-planned revenge. The revenge story is narrated by Raj (Himanshu) to his adoptive mother (Reema Lagoo) in a flashback mode. After witnessing the court proceedings involving a rape case, Raj is impressed by lawyer, K K Verma (Sadashiv Amrapurkar) the way he presented the case as a defence lawyer to set free a wealthy rapist. He meets K K Verma to exploit the legal loopholes by which he can get a woman raped and make her pregnant without being proved the criminal charges for sexual assaults.

With the confidence gathered from the lawyer, the man pursues a girl, Neelu (Saadhika) who happens to be the daughter of lawyer Verma. After some initial problems, Raj is successful in pursuing her. They develops intimate relationship. One day, he proposes to marry her which she is happy. But he says that she has to wait for a month because he is visiting the USA. Instead of USA, Raj visits New Zealand where he meets another girl, Tina (Simran), who is the second daughter of K K Verma. After frequent meetings and saving her from a kidnapper (Shiva Rindani), Tine becomes close to Raj and spends with him some intimate time.

In India, Neelu is waiting Raj to return. She gets the medical report from nursing home that she is pregnant. Similarly, in New Zealand Raj has told the same reason to Tina that he is going on a visit to the USA for a month after which he will return and get married. Tina become pregnant. Raj is in touch with both of them and tells them that he is reaching India. Tina also decides to visit India where her sister, Neelu is also pregnant. Now, Raj, Neelu and Tina are all in India. Raj meets Verma and gifts him a whiskey bottle for having successful in his venture of seducing the girls taking care from the legal angle as per his advice and making hem pregnant.

The plot gets a twist when Raj manipulates K K Verma’s secretary to inform her bosse’s close friends that there is a get-together at K K Verma’s house. Verma gets to know that both the pregnant girls happen to be his daughters. Both his daughters agreed that they had consensual physical relationship before marriage. Therefter, Raj reveals that he has been plotting the revenge against the lawyer. The reason is that 20 years back, K K Verma had made Raj’s sister pregnant out of wedlock. When the lawyer was threatened by Raj’s mother and his pregnant sister, he got both of them killed. After hearing the revenge story, Verma tries to shoot Raj but Neelu comes in between taking a bullet on herself. Before dying, she kills her lawyer-father for his dishonorable deeds. Finally, Raj’s adoptive mother (Reema Lagoo) prevails upon Raj not to behave like K K Verma and take the responsibility by formalising his relationship with Tina through marrying her, with their child.

The film failed at the box office due to its unconventional story, the predictable plot and lacklustre performance of Himanshu and the weak screenplay. The audience got to know that two pregnant girls were the lawyers daughters much earlier than required to create suspense. I also felt that Raj’s character at the beginning as Casanova type and later changed as a revenger failed to create sympathy factor for his character. Also, the film did not have star value to attract the audience.

The film had seven songs written by Sameer (5) and Saawan Kumar (2) which were set to music by Usha Khanna. The film makes its debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘jaane kaun thhee haseena’ rendered by Abheejit and Asha Bhosle who sings for Himanshu and Simran (real name: Rishibala Naval) respectively. The song is written by Saawan Kumar.

The context of the song is that Raj (Himanshu) has reached New Zealand with a view to pursuing second daughter of lawyer, Verma (Sadashiv Amrapurkar), Tina (Simran). Raj has impressed her with his photography as well as saving her from a stalker (Shiva Rindani). So, she has fallen in love with Raj and the song follows.
