Blog Day :6672Post No. :20644

Today’s song is the last and final song from a Cine- Historical film Aap ki Sewa mein-1947.

The film is called Historical, because it had Lata Mangeshkar’s First playback song in Hindi. The song was shot on Dancer Rohini Bhate, in this film. There seems toba a lot of confusion in deciding which song should be called a First Song ? This is because there are several varieties of the first song in a film. For example- a song recorded First time, a song released on a record First time, a song recorded and sung by the artist himself in the film etc. But the genuine film enthusiast knows that for a Playback singer, the most important is the song sung for another actor on the screen, which is his First Playback song. Many playback singers-like Kishore kumar or Punkaj Mullick- sang their songs on the screen themselves.

Let us once for all, know which were the different First Songs of Lata Mangeshkar…..

  1. In 1942, Lata recorded her first song for a film. It is a Marathi film by Vasant Joglekar titled ‘Kiti Hasaal’. The song which was recorded is “Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari”, composed by Sadashivrao Nevrekar. The song was edited out of the final cut of the film.

By some accounts it is surmised that Lata ji was not acting in this film. Hence, by definition, if this song had survived the editor’s cuts, it would have been a playback song, picturized on someone else.

– FIRST MARATHI FILM SONG, RECORDED, BUT NOT USED.

  1. Again in 1942, Master Vinayak gave her a small role in Navyug Chitrapat’s Marathi film ‘Pahili Mangalaa-gaur’. In this film, she sang and performed the song “Natali Chaitraachi Navalaai”, composed by Dada Chandekar.

– FIRST MARATHI FILM SONG, RECORDED AND PERFORMED BY HERSELF ON SCREEN.

(NOTE: This song is available on YouTube.)

  1. In 1944, she acted in another Marathi film, ‘Gajabhaau’. In this film, she sang a Hindi song, “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki, Duniya Badal De Tu”, which in all likelihood is also filmed on herself.

– FIRST HINDI SONG, IN A MARATHI FILM, RECORDED AND PERFORMED BY HERSELF ON SCREEN.

  1. In 1945, Master Vinayak made his first Hindi film, ‘Badi Maa’. The music director is Datta Korgaonkar (or K Datta). This film had small roles for both Lata ji and Asha ji. In this film, she has sung two songs. One is a group song with another singer, Meenakshi, and chorus. The song is “Tum Maa Ho, Badi Maa. . .”. Lyrics are by Anjum Pilibhiti.
The second song is also a group song. The male singer is identified as Ishwarlal in some internet sources. The song is “Mata Tere Charnon Mein Guzar Jaaye Umariyaa”. Lyrics are by Zia Sarhadi. In this particular song, the primary singing is by the group as a chorus. There are a few lines sung by the male singer. In the entire song, one can barely make out one or two lines that are sung alone by Lata ji.

– THE SONG “MAATA TERE CHARNON MEIN. . .”, FIRST HINDI SONG, IN A HINDI FILM, RECORDED AND PERFORMED AS A CHORUS

  1. In 1946, Master Vinayak directed his second Hindi film, ‘Jeevan Yatra’. The music director is Vasant Desai. In this film, we have the first solo song recorded by Lata ji. The song is “Chidiyaan Bolen Choon Choon Choon, Mynaah Boley Hoo Hoo Hoo. . .”. Lata is also in the list of actors, and once again in all likelihood, she performed the song on the screen.

– FIRST SOLO HINDI SONG, IN A HINDI FILM, RECORDED AND PERFORMED BY HERSELF

  1. After ‘Jeevan Yatra’ follows 1 more film during 1946, in which Lata has recorded a song in her own voice. She has acted in this film and in all likelihood, has performed this song herself on the screen.

– ‘Subhadra’, music director Vasant Desai. In this film, Lata ji has two solo songs and one duet with Shanta Apte.

  1. Then starting 1947, Lata ji stopped taking on acting assignments, and started to focus on singing alone. In 1947, she sung songs in three films, ‘Aap Ki Sewa Mein’, ‘Shaadi Ke Baad’, and ‘Shehnaai’.

– In ‘Aap Ki Sewa Mein’, she has sung three solo songs, under the music direction of Datta Dawjekar. Of these three, the song “Paa Laagun Kar Jori Re. . .” is generally acknowledged as the first Hindi song recorded by Lata ji, as a playback for another actor.

– FIRST SOLO HINDI SONG, IN A HINDI FILM, RECORDED AS PLAYBACK FOR ANOTHER ACTRESS

– In ‘Shaadi Ke Baad’, she has sung her first duet with Rafi Saab, under the baton of Paigankar and Karnad.

– In ‘Shehnaai’, she has sung one group song with Geeta Dutt and chorus, under the baton of C Ramchandra

And so, considering the available data as documented above, there are many ways to identify the first song by Lata ji. These are:

  1. First song – Marathi in a Marathi film, recorded but then not used in the film (‘Kiti Hasaal’, 1942)
  2. First song – Marathi in a Marathi film, recorded and performed by her on screen (‘Pahili Mangalaa-gaur’, 1942)
  3. First song – Hindi in a Marathi film, presumably recorded and performed by her on screen (‘GajaaBaahu’, 1944)
  4. First song – Hindi in a Hindi film, group song, recorded and performed by her on screen (‘Badi Maa’, 1945)
  5. First song – Hindi in a Hindi film, solo song, recorded and performed by her on screen (‘Jeevan Yatra’, 1946)
  6. First song – Hindi in a Hindi film, solo song, as a playback (‘Aap Ki Sewa Mein’, 1947)

The first Playback song from this film was written by Mahipal, who later became famous for his Mythological films. The song was composed by Datta Davjekar. So much about Lata’s First Playback Song.

Something about today’s song. This is the song on the “Palti Side” of Lata Mangeshkar’s First Playback song ” -” Pa lagoo, kar jori re”. After Lata became very famous, this record was in much demand by the Record Collectors, as only few copies were available and they were difficult to procure. Syed Zafer Shah, collector of Records, said that he paid Rs. 25000 for this record in those times. He was kind enough to send me its MP3 version, which was uploaded by our own Sadanand Kamath ji.

Today’s song is sung by Mohantara Talpade. Mohantara Talpade, niece of the Producer/Director, Keshav Talpade. She started in 1942 and sang 130 songs in 54 films till 1958. She was a very popular singer in marathi films and NFS. She was born on 24-10-1926 in Bombay. She studied upto matriculation. She learnt music from Heerabai Zaveri, Shyamalabai Mazgaonkar and Navrang Master too. Khemchand Prakash recorded her first song in 1941 but her song in the film Mamaji-1942 was released first. It was composed by H.C.Bali, who was responsible for Saigal’s entry in films.

1946 was the best year for her as she sang in 12 films in 1946. Her best period was 1946 to 1948. Then Lata overtook and she fell back. She was married in 1949 and took a 3 years’ gap to raise a family. She became Mohantara Ajinkya. From 1952 to 1955 again she sang. Then she shifted to Marathi and became popular there.

Some of her films were- Dhanna Bhagat, Prabhu ka Ghar, Amar Raz, Chehra, Dharti, Gokul, Kuldeep, Magadh raj,Pujari, Aap ki Sewa mein, Bhakta Dhruv, Vo Zamana, Zinda Dil, Adalat, Andhon ka Sahara, Bichhade Baalam, Khidki, Lakhpati, Mere laal,Imtihan, Roshni, Veer Ghatotkach, Saudamini, Vishwamitra, Gunah, Pehli Shadi, Gokul ka chor, Raj kumari and her last film Inaam. She sang130 songs in 54 films.

Today is the Birth Centenary Day of Mohantara Talpade and her song will be played here today ! What a coincidence !! She will surely Bless ATULSONGADAY for this unique honour !!!

The name of Music Director Datta Davjekar is not commonly heard in Hindi Films, but he was a big name in Marathi films. In the Hindi film industry, there were many name alikes. Some of them also caused serious problems of ‘Same Name Confusion” also. Artistes of the same name was a common phenomenon in early cinema i.e. the 30s and the 40s. Then it diminished slowly. This matter was not only common in actors, but also in other categories also. As far as Music Directors are concerned, there were so many “Datta”s as MDs. Some of them at the same time and few causing the SNC syndrome too ! There were K.Datta, N.Datta, Narayan Dutt, D C. Dutt, Dattaram and Datta Davjekar. Each one contributed to HFM to his ability. One MD’s name will be written in Golden Ink, in the History of HFM. Its name is DATTA DAVJEKAR. The film Maazhe Baal, released in 1943, was Davjekar’s first Marathi film with Lata Mangeshkar. He went on to introduce her to Hindi films with his song Paa Laagoo Kar Jori Re for the film Aap Ki Sewa Mein (1947).

Family sources said Davjekar died of a heart attack at his Andheri residence late last night. The funeral took place at the Oshiwara crematorium this morning and was attended by family, friends and admirers.

Condoling the death of Mr Davjekar, Lata Mangeshkar recollected that the late music composer had given her the first opportunity in playback singing in his movie “Aap Ki Seva Mein”. “Just like his music, he was a sweet human being,” Mangeshkar said.

Datta Davjekar also composed music for twelve plays including “Thank You Mr Glad” for which he learnt German music. In a career spanning more than six decades, he scored music for nearly 60 films. (Based on information from Wiki, One India, and Marathi Chitrapat Sangeetkar kosh, with thanks.)
