‘Baazigar’ (1993) was a blockbuster film which I missed to watch in the theatre after its release. Even later, I had no occasion to watch the film on TV and Video sharing/OTT platforms. But I was aware of the films hit songs mainly because they used to regularly appear on TV channels (probably on MTV/Channel V) after the release of the film. The occasion to watch the film has come now because I have selected one of the songs from the film picturised on Shilpa Shetty who made her debut with this film. I found the film interesting even after three decades mainly for one reason – its slick editing. The film never deviates from the main plot even during the comedy sub-plots.
The film was produced by Ganesh Jain and was directed by Abbas-Mustan. The cast included Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Shilpa Shetty, Siddharth, Dalip Tahil, Johny Lever, Anant Mahadevan, Dinesh Hingoo, Adi Irani, Resham Tipnis, Amrut Patel. etc. Rakhee Gulzar made her special appearance in the film. This was Shah Rukh Khan’s first anti-hero role though in ‘Darr’ (1993), which was released a few weeks earlier, he had similar role but it was more as an antagonist than anti-hero.
Ganesh Jain is one of the seven brothers who founded Venus Records and Tapes sometime in 1980s. Later, they diversified into film productions under the banner, United Seven Combines/Venus Movies and produced their first film, ‘Khiladi’ (1992) which became a super hit. The film under discussion was their second film.
The story of the film is narrated on the screen with few flashbacks scenes . However, for simplification, the story is discussed below in a sequential order:
Ajay Sharma (Shah Rukh Khan) has grievances against the businessman, Madan Chopra (Dalip Tahil) because during his childhood, Madan as an employee of his father, Vishwanath Sharma (Anant Mahadevn), a businessman, had indulged in some embezzlement thus taking over his business. As a result, Vishwanath loses his palatial house in an auction. Due to these shocks, Vishwanath dies of heart attack and his infant daughter also dies due to malnutrition. The young Ajay looks after his mentally broke mother at a small house in the outskirt of Mumbai with the help of his neighbour (Asha Singh). Ajay has a built-up anger against Madan for his family’s pitiable situation and he is bent upon taking a revenge.
Ajay grows up to his adulthood. He shifts to Mumbai where Madan is based with his two daughters, Seema (Shilpa Shetty) and Priya (Kajol) in a palatial house. Ajay develops a romantic relationship with Madan’s elder daughter and collegian, Seema. Ravi (Daboo Malik), her collegemate has a one-sided crush on her. When Seema comes to know that her father has arranged her marriage with a son of a wealthy businessman, she insists Ajay to meet her father to formally ask for her hand in marriage.
Ajay manipulates Seema by convincing her that her father will never agree for her marriage with a poor person like him. When two lovers cannot marry due to class differences, the best way to get united is to commit suicide. Both writes suicide notes which makes clear the reason for their suicide without putting blame on anyone. Having got Seema’s suicide note in his hand, Ajay tells her that it was a prank he played just to test her as to how deeply she is in love with him. He suggests her that they should elope and get married at the office of the Registrar of Marriage. He calls Seema the next day to meet him near the Registrar of Marriage office where they will get married and register the marriage.
The next day, Seema and Ajay meets at the Registrar’s office which is yet to open. He takes Seema for a stroll during which they reach the terrace of the building. While standing at the edge of the terrace wall, suddenly, Ajay lifts Seema and reveals her his revenge intention while throwing her from the terrace to the ground. Seema is dead. He sends by post her suicide note written in her own handwriting to Madan. Because of the suicide note, police close the case as that of suicide and Ajay escapes suspicion of killing Seema.
Having achieved his first revenge, Ajay works for his second and the finale of his revenge against Madan to stripe him out of all his wealth in his favour He starts romancing with Madan’s second daughter, Priya. This time, he changes his real name Ajay, to Vicky Malhotra. Since his main target is Madan, he tries to create confidence building measures, first with Priya and later with Madan. Vicky meets Priya for the first time at a motor race event. He intentionally manages a car crash in which he comes out unscratched, which impresses Priya. In the next motor race, he intentionally loses the race to Madan to boost his alter ego. All these factors create a favouable impression of both Madan and Priya on Vicky. Priya deeply falls in love with Vicky. Madan gives his consent for their marriage and plans for an engagement ceremony. Madan not only makes Vicky as his business partner, but he also gives him the general power of attorney during his business visit abroad. This is the first step for Vicky to grab the business empire of Madan.
Side by side, Priya has been refusing to believe that Seema committed suicide because earlier, she had got a bill from a jeweler for making a ‘mangalsutra’ which Seema had ordered. Priya thinks that it may be her lover who had killed her or forced her to commit suicide. But her suicide note written in her own handwriting and signed by her makes it clear that she has committed suicide. So, Priya has been investigating her death through her friend, police inspector, Karan (Siddharth) who has an one-sided love for her since the college days. Priya gets some initial breakthrough in Seema’s suicide. Seema’s collegemate, Ravi reveals that he has a photograph of Seema with a person who was seen with her which he promises to hand over to Priya. However, before he could do that Vicky kills him and stages it as a suicide. During the engagement ceremony, Seema’s friend, Anjali (Resham Tipnis) calls her to says that she has a photograph in which Seema is seen with a person whose face has similarity with Vicky. However, Vicky intercepts the call and later get her killed.
Next day, Inspector Karan meets Priya to inform her that Anjali was found dead, She had made a phone call to her on the night of her engagement. Priya is not aware of it. Coincidentally Vicky Malhotra (Adi Irani), meets them in a night club. He calls Vicky as Ajay being his friend. who refuses to recognise him. This incidence puts Vicky as suspect of some fishy nature in the eyes of Priya.
Madan returns from his business trip abroad and is shocked to see that the name of his company has been changed to Vishwanath Sharma Group of Companies as Vicky has taken over the company during Madan’ trip abroad. Madan has no option but leaves the place by threatening Vicky that he will come back to regain his company. Unmindful of her father losing the control of his business, Priya gets the address from airline’ss office the address of Vicky Malhotra and visits his house to find the real Vicky Malhotra in the house. He directs her to visit Ajay’s house nearby. Priya finds Ajay’s photo frames as well as a locket in which she finds the miniature photographs of Ajay and Seema. By that time, Ajay/Vicky arrives his house ostensibly to inform his mother that he has achieved the full control of the business empire from Madan which once belonged to his father. But instead, Ajay/Vicky finds Priya. She confronts him as to why he did all the killings.
Ajay gives her a full account of how her father, Madan had cheated his father to take over his business putting them not only to the extreme poverty but also the loss of his father and younger sister. By that time, Madan comes with his henchmen and beats up Ajay resulting serious injuries to him. His mother gathers strength to save Ajay but she is pushed away falling on the ground and thus regaining her mental balance. After watching his mother being pushed down, Ajay gets a spirited strength and beats up all the henchmen and also Madan with a vengeance. Lastly, Madan gets an iron rod which he pierces Ajay’s stomach almost making him half dead. But his revengeful mind gets strength and with the same iron road he kills Madan.
Ajay, now battling for his life, falls in the laps of his mother and tells her that he has regained for her the business empire from Madan. With this statement, Ajay dies in the lap of his mother with Priya weeps in silence overwhelmed by loss to both the families with her sympathy for Ajay.
The film had eight songs (one song in dual version) written by Rani Malik (3), Nawab Arzoo (1), Gauhar Kanpuri (1), Zamir Kazmi (1), Zafar Gorakhpuri (1) and Dev Kohli (1) which were set to music by Anu Malik. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the second song, ‘kitaaben bahut si padhee hongee tumne’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and Vinod Rathod who are singing for Shilpa Shetty and Shah Rukh Khan, respectively. The song is written by Zafar Gorakhpuri. In the picturisation of the song, Daboo Malik, Shilpa Shetty’s collegemate and a secret lover, is seen watching them through the tree trunks.
The background to the song is that Ajay (Shah Rukh Khan) is already dating Seema (Shilpa Shetty), the daughter of Madan Chopra (Dalip Tahil) as a part of the calculated revenge plot against Madan Chopra. They meet secretly just to avoid her father’s attention who is planning to marry Seema to someone else. Seema has called Ajay to meet her at the college compass. But she get delayed. When he sees her coming, Ajay pretends as if he was busy with reading a book. She scolds him that instead of starting conversation. he is glued to the book. He tells her that books are better than the ladylove because they do not make one to wait. After some banters, the song follows which take them to some playful teasing.
