‘Shaabaash Daddy’ (1978) was produced and directed by Kishore Kumar who also wrote the story and screenplay beside being the music director of the film. The cast included Kishore Kumar, Yogita Bali, Amit Kumar, Jayasudha, Jayshri T, Madan Puri, Sulochana Chatterjee, S N Banerjee, Maruti, Bhagwan, Bhushan Tiwari, Sarla Chhaaya, Shefali, Mehmood etc. This is the first film in which Amit Kumar was launched by Kishore Kumar in an adult role.
The film is a slapstick romantic comedy which was in the making for a long time. During the making of the film, Kishore Kumar got married with Yogita Bali on August 17,1976. They were divorced before the release of the film. The album of film’s songs was released in 1977. The film was certified by CBFC on April 03, 1978.
I have watched the film on a VCD which seems to be a trimmed version of the film. What I liked most about the film is its six out of eight songs which can be called as ‘plot songs’ because they are composed in a narrative style to advance the storyline. I am reminded of the songs that played similar roles in the Hollywood films, ‘My Fair Lady’ (1964) and ‘The Sound of Music’. (1965).
The story of the film is as under:
Col. Chhaju Singh (Kishore Kumar) stays with his son, Chandar Singh (Amit Kumar). After retirement from the army, Chhaju Singh has been staying alone in his house as his son was studying elsewhere staying in the hostel. To get out of boredom of living alone, Chhaju Singh has taken painting as his hobby. Chander has returned after completing his education.
One day, Chhaju Singh tells his son that for the last 15 years after the death of his wife, there is no occasion for any woman to stay in his house. Hence, there is a need to have once more a bride in this house and he cannot wait for long as he has already crossed 50 years. Chander, assuming that his father is hinting about his second marriage, agrees and says that in the foreign countries, people are getting married even at the age of 80 years. Chhaju gets angry with Chander and tells him that he is talking about his son’s marriage and it is his order to get married.
Chhaju proposes to bring Brigadier Vishwambar Singh’s daughter, Pinki (Jaya Sudha) as a bride for Chander. Both father and son visit Brigadier’s house to enable Chander to see the girl and have a private talks with each other. They liked each other and convey their decisions to their fathers. In the meanwhile, Chhaju Singh receives a telegram from his army friend, Major Dagdu Bajrang (Mehmood) who looks after his property at Sundarban to reach there as there is some problems with a neighbour.
Chhaju drives to Sundarban and on the way, his jeep dashes with a fisherwoman, Kamali (Yogita Bali). After paying compensation for the loss of her fish, Chhaju drops to her house which is near to his property in Sundarban. He meets his caretaker Major Dagdu and the maid servant Amba (Jayshri T) who says that his neighbour, Chandu (Bhushan Tiwari) has complaint that his hens spoil his premises with droppings. Chhaju Singh decides to stay with Dagdu for few days. Dagdu cautions him not to meet any fisherwoman as they are dangerous. Next day, Chhaju Singh goes to a backwater spot to do some painting where he meets a journalist, Rangachari (Maruti) who is expert in reporting gossips. The journalist tries to elicit information from him as to why he has come to the place but Chhaju ignores him.
Chhaju engages Kamali who also runs coracle to take passenger to cross the backwater. He comes to know that Kamali has been brought up by her blind grandfather. He makes a portrait of Kamali which she likes. He offers her double the money she earned by selling fish if she agrees to pose as a model for the painting. For Kamali it is windfall as she has never earned so much money. Every day, both Chhaju and Kamali go by boat for their painting session.
One day, Chhaju fails to come for his painting session while Kamali has been waiting for him. Chandu who has been keeping an eye on Kamali clandestinely sells her to a man who tries to abduct her. Chhaju comes and rescues her. Since Kamali having waited for Chhaju to arrive for the whole day, she gets drunk. With great difficulties, Chhaju brings her to his house for the night shelter.
Next day, Dagdu gets annoyed with Chhaju for having given shelter to Kamali in his house. He accuses her of trying to seduce his friend. Kamali leaves the house at once. Chhaju gets upset with Dagdu and goes to Kamali’s house to offers his apology. During their chitchat, Chhaju reveals her that his son is getting married to Brigadier’s daughter. She asked Chhaju as to why he did not get married after his lost his wife early. Chhaju gets an idea that having finalised his son’s marriage , he is now free of his responsibilities. So he seriously considers her advice. He even removes his moustache to look younger than his age. Gradually, both Chhaju and Kamali develops liking for each other. This is not liked by Dagdu. He and Chhaju confronts on this matter. A disgusted Chhaju leaves his house and goes to Kamali’s house to inform her that he is returning to Mumbai. Kamali convinces him to stay for a day.
The closeness of Kamali with Chhaju is resented by Chandu. He tells both Chhaju and Dagdu that he is a prospective husband to Kamali but ever since Chhaju has come to the village, Kamali has discarded him. There is another problem for Chhaju. The gossip journalist, Rangachari has published a story with photographs of Chhaju and Kamali in a local newspapers about their love affairs. The newspaper story reaches Mumbai and is read by Brigadier Vishwambar who cancels the marriage of Pinki with Chander and on the same marriage date, he is planning to fix the marriage of Pinki with a son of his friend.
Chander and Pinki elope in the midnight and land in Sundarban to meet his daddy to decide the future course of action. Coincidentally, they cross the backwater in Kamali’s coracle and she takes them to her house for serving them some food. Chhaju comes out of the house and is surprised to see Chander and Pinki. They brief him about the developments following the newspaper’s story. Chhaju does not deny the newspaper reports which create complications for Chander and Pinki. Kamali says that she will not marry Chhaju to pave the way for the smooth marriage of Chander and Pinki.
While everything seems settled, Brigadier Vishwamber with his wife reach Sundarban and confronts Chhaju who says that he has decided not to marry Kamali. But Brigadier says that his name has been tarnished because of the newspaper reports as well as Chander eloping with Pinki. So, he will return with Pinki to Mumbai to get her married to a son of his friend. Pinki refuses to obey her father. Brigadier threatens to shoot her. However, everyone present asks him to shoot them first. In this confusion, Brigadier gives up his strong stand. Chander and Pinki are married and returns to Mumbai. When they are leaving for honeymoon, Chander advises his father that now he will be alone in the house, he should find some partner in his life. When the newly married couple leave for their honeymoon, Chhaju leaves for Sundarban and presents himself to Kamali.
The film had eight songs written by Irshad (4), Kishore Kumar, (3) and Gulshan Bawra (1) which were set to music by Kishore Kumar. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the second song, ‘bheeni bheeni ye bheegi bheegi ye khaamoshiyaan’ rendered by Amit Kumar singing for himself and Sulakshna Pandit singing for Jayasudha. Kishore Kumar has composed the song in a jazz style with rhythm without the use of traditional percussions which fits well for a slow ball room dance. The interlude music sounds like a symphony orchestra because of the predominance of violins and other string instruments.
Unfortunately, this song is not available on VCDs of the film to know the context but the video clip of the song is available which indicates that the song was picturised. The VHS tape of the film may have this song. In the video of the song, there is a scene before the start of the song in which Jayasudha is getting ready for going out. Probably, both have planned to meet each other outside and she starts imagining the dream sequence in which both are expressing love for each other.
