#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
———————————————————————
(Music Composer R.D. Burman’s 32nd Remembrance Day)
——————————————————————
Today 4th January 2026 is the 33rd Remembrance Anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman who is fondly known as ‘Pancham’. He was born on 27th June 1939 and he passed away on 4th January 1994 at the age of only 54.
Today on Pancham’s 33rd Remembrance Day we will be paying our tributes to him by listening to some of his compositions that were not yet presented till now.
While much of his musical treasure is already available for music lovers to savour, some more of this treasure is still being unearthed and is being shared online. I hope this process of digging up his as yet unknown compositions will continue in future as well.
From an estimated figure of 1755 songs from 331 Hindi movies composed by Pancham we have so far covered 944 songs from 254 Hindi movies on this blog.
I start day’s proceedings by presenting a song from the 1985 movie ‘AMEER AADMI GHAREEB AADMI’. It was directed by Amjad Khan for ‘Cinema International’s’. Shehla Khan and Vinay Sinha were the producers of this movie. Actor Amjad Khan who directed this movie had also credited as writer and editor of the movie as well. Dialogues for this movie were written by Akhtar-Ul-Iman. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19.02.1985.

What is global capitalism theory?
Global capitalism refers to the concept of a global economy dominated by globalizing corporations and those who own and control them, operating beyond national boundaries and interests.
What are the three theories of capitalism?
These include laissez-faire or free-market capitalism, state capitalism, and welfare capitalism. Different forms of capitalism feature varying degrees of free markets, public ownership, obstacles to free competition, and state-sanctioned social policies.
What are the 4 types of capitalism?
In our analysis, we found it useful to classify capitalist economies into four categories: oligarchic capitalism, state-guided capitalism, big-firm capitalism, and entrepreneurial capitalism.
*******************************************
The above is just to get to the idea of “Bade log” in todays context. We are in the middle of third decade of 21st century, a quarter of which we all have seen/ lived through.
Alhamdullillah for everything, the grand plan of the Almighty takes shape in the ways he ordains. We humans must just bear it, as we cannot change anything. We can try and equip ourselves, using the faculties granted by the Almighty, to deal with the things destined. With wisdom, dignity, patience, and faith.
We are grappling as a human race, with fears of food shortages, natural calamities like wildfires, unnatural calamities like a nuclear war, plus the biggest fear of all, giving the power over fate, to the unwise, the undignified, the impatient and the faithless.
The biggest responsibility and purpose of the humans in the universe is to be worthy of its creator. We have been given the faculties, granted to no other being. This is the simple purpose of creation; scientists/thinkers/philosophers are trying to find for millennia.
This is “chhotta munh aur badi baat”, but just to state things in the proper perspective as things stand.
The song under discussion is from the film “Phandebaaz” 1978. R. D. Burman is the composer, with lyrics of Anand Bakshi. Mohammed Rafi is singing for Dharmendra and Amit Kumar is singing for Dharmendra’s partner, the actor I cannot name.
These 3 songs are posted in the blog.
| Song | Date of post |
|---|---|
| Dulhan khoobsurat hai.. abhi gyaarah nahin baje hain | 27 May 2009 |
| Mohabbat mein aji kya aap apna imtihaan denge | 28 June 2013 |
| Duniya mein paise binaa kaise hum jiyenge | 30 December 2023 |
Helen is also seen in the song. The filming is done in areas of South Bombay, showing some landmark buildings and roads of the city, how it all looked in 1978. This could be the first duet song of Mohammed Rafi – Amit Kumar to feature in the blog. I had seen a photograph of Kishore Kumar sitting on the floor with a young boy next to the “maiyyat” of Rafi Sahab. It must have been taken on 1st August, 1980 at home, before the funeral procession. The boy is the younger son of Kishore Kumar, looked exactly like Amit Kumar. I mistook him for Amit Kumar. But checked recently that Amit Kumar is much older, and here he is singing duets with Rafi Sahab.
Dharmendra – Rafi songs are not over yet. More landmark songs remain to be posted. I have posted so many over the last 2 months, that a series could have been made.

Today’s song is the last and final song of the social film Bade Bhaiya-1951.
As seen in the ‘Hindi film Index’ by Hamraz ji, I found that there were at least 25 films having titles of ‘Bada’, ‘Badi’ and ‘Bade’. There was also another film Bade Bhaiya made in 1957. There films like Bada bhai, Badi behen (3 films), Badi Beti, Bada Ghar, Bade nawab, Bade miyan, Bade Saheb, Bade Sarkar, Bade thakur, Badi bahu, Badi baat etc. etc.
The film Bade Bhaiyya-1951 was probably one of the last films in which actor Agha was the Hero. The film was made by Super Pictures, Bombay. The owner of the banner- Aspi Irani was also the director of this film. The music was by Premnath ( Wadhwan), who was a member of the ‘Same Name Confusion’ pair with actor Premnath (Malhotra). Looking at the persona of actor Premnath, it was strange how so many people thought that he also gave music. Of course actor Premnath actually had received a regular training in classical music from Ustad Jagannath Prasad. He had also sung 2 songs in Hindi films, Rangbhoomi-1946 and Chand Sitare- 1948. However, he stopped singing after that.

Madhubala-1950, A Ranjit Movietone film, directed by Prahlad Dutt had music by Pt.Lachhiram. The cast of the film was Madhubala, Dev Anand, Jeevan, Randhir, Manju, Ram Avatar and others.
We have been taught in our school that 2=2 is 4. But in life, sometimes 2+2 is also 22 like, when a Love marriage is by the willing consent of both the families, or getting a child after 10 years of marriage or when your son stands First and wins a Gold medal in his MBBS course, it is the 2+2=22 ! Similarly when ‘Rati’ and ‘Madan’ come together, it is 2+2=22 ! In our language, when the eternal beauty Madhubala pairs with the handsome, young Dev Anand it is 2+2=22 again.
In the film Madhubala-1950, when these two were paired, no wonder people were ecstatic and crowded the cinema halls. No one bothered if the story was weak or the music was third rate. These two were enough to please them. Here, of course the story was good and the music too !

A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 10
The sad and pensive songs have about 30% share in all Bollywood songs. Romantic songs will be a little above at 40%. This is a hazardous line of guessing data game. As there are 100% of them, the rest of 30% shall go in which account? They will be the inane, fillers, comic relief, or item numbers. There are less songs now then the golden era, so there is less or everything. Less of meaningless, song fillers, bathroom break type of songs.
Sad songs of ARR are a special breed. Most award winning songs of other musicians are sad songs, not so for ARR. ARR has more dance songs winning accolades. “Jai Ho” in ‘Slumdog Millionaire” is a case in point. I am not sure where to fit “chanda re chanda re”. It is a romantic song with dance/rhythm.
I am posting here a sad song here from the 2015 film “Tamasha”.One song from the film is posted in the blog. I believe I have seen this film in bits and patches, so cannot recall much.

Today’s song is from a Costume film (HFGK mentions it as a ‘social’ film) – Awara Shehzadi-1956.
There are a total of 14 film titles having Awara in it. Funnily, the original “Awara Shehzada”was a film of 1933. It took 23 years to bring about a female version of the Title with Awara Shehzadi in 1956 ! Incidentally, the film ‘Awara Shehzada’-33 was the First Talkie film, having a Double Role. Shahu Modak had done the roles of the Prince ( Rajkumar) and the Pauper ( Bholaram) in this film. It was directed by Master Vithal, the First Hero of First Talike of India, “Aalam Ara “-1931. Master Vithal was also the first male actor to feature in the Silent Films’ first double role in the film ” Prisoner of Love “- 1927 (aka Raj Tarang) made by Sharda Films.

WISHING ALL READERS A WONDERFUL AND HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026, FULL OF JOY, SUCCESS, PEACE, HOPE, ENERGY AND GOOD HEALTH.
As discussed in the last post, the compilation of Mukesh-Asha Bhosale duets has started. But it may take some time as it not only involves preparing a long table of 50+ rows, but also to ensure that no songs are left out and the list is complete. As this is work in progress, I thought I would squeeze in a couple of more posts in the meanwhile instead of taking a long hiatus.
Also, I would like to make the Asha Bhosale post memorable for a special occasion. For that we will cross the bridge when we reach it.

In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the famous line “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet” means names are mere labels, arbitrary conventions that do not define the essence or true quality of a thing (or person). Juliet says this to Romeo, lamenting that his family name (Montague) is the only barrier to their love, as his actual person is still wonderful regardless of that name.
