Today’s song is from the stunt film – Hunterwali ki Beti-1943.

This is perhaps the only film in a Hindi cinema,so far, where the same actress has done the role of a young woman in a film and again did the role of her daughter in the same film. There are some Hindi films which double roles have been done by a few actresses, of mother and daughter in the same film. What makes today’s film different is its Title.

Today’s song is from a stunt film Jungle Princess-1942.

Today’s song is from the film Gol Nishan-1936.

The first Talkie film came in 1931. The first year had just 24 films, but within a span of 3 years, the Talkie films crossed the century mark, with 121 films in 1934, 152 in 1933 and 134 in 1936. Making a film was a complicated process which needed a studio, the latest machinery and a lot of money. This was difficult for a single person and thus the Studio System got established. The studios ruled the industry and the film making. Films were sold on the names of the studios and the actors had secondary appeal to the audience.

Today’s song is from an old film Paak Daman-1940.

Actually, I need not have written ” from an old film”, because my name is now firmly connected with old films only. This is in spite of my posts on a fair number of films and songs from 1970 to 2016 also. However branding and the label has stuck to me pucca.

Today’s song is from a very old film – almost 86 years old – Gopal Krishna-1938.

Modern Technology has made wonders possible, otherwise finding such old songs unthinkable. The first year of the Talkie Cinema saw the release of 24 films in its first year-1931. None of these films are available now. The oldest Hindi film that is available today is the film ” Ayodhya Ka Raja”-1932 in Hindi and Marathi (as अयोध्येचा राजा ), made by the Prabhat Film Company of Poona, Maharashtra. Same year, Prabhat also made another film ” Shyam Sunder”-1932. This was the Debut film of Shahu Modak, as young Krishna and also Shanta Apte as his mother-Yashoda. This too was made in Hindi and Marathi.

Happy birthday to Biswajeet (born December 14, 1936), the ‘chocolate hero’ of the 1960s on completing 87 years of age today. Kolkata born Biswajeet got his first break in a Bengali film, ‘Kangsha’ (1958). By 1962, he did about a dozen Bangla films before he shifted to Mumbai.

Today’s song is from the film Adhikar-1938.

After a pretty long time, I am writing on a film song of New Theatres, Calcutta. From the 30’s to the early 50’s, New Theatres routinely made bilingual films in Bangla and Hindi. Almost every film coming from New Theatres became popular. The “Saigal” factor was one of the points of attraction, no doubt, but their films without Saigal also became popular.

Hullo Atuldom

The blog has songs from “Shri 420” (1955), “Shrimati 420” (1956) & “Ustaad 420” (1969) – from which “Shrimati 420” is one short from being YYIIPPEEEED. Hindi films have a few more ‘420’ (char sau bees). There is a “Khiladi 420” which came in 2000 & “Chachi 420” which released in 1997. These are the 420/s that I know of, there may be one or two more films with ‘420’ in their title.

Today’s song is from the film Panna Dai-1945.

One year earlier i.e. in 1944 another film Panna-1944 was released, but that one was made as a British War Propaganda movie. In that movie, the lead actress Geeta Nizami was awarded Rs. 6000 for her role, by the British Government ! Of course, the film Panna Dai-1945 was clearly a film on the historically famous Panna Dai of Rajputana for her singular supreme sacrifice for saving her King’s heir from the enemies.
