Today’s song is from the film Roti-1942.

The early 40’s were when the Socialistic pattern of the Communist philosophy was spreading fast all over the world. Nehru was fully sold to the Socialistic pattern of Governance and he enthusiastically used to propagate it in his speeches. The film industry was in awe with the impression of Nehru and a few major filmmakers openly echoed his thinking. producers like Mehboob Khan, Kardar, Bimal Roy and some Bangla filmmakers were influenced by nehruvian philosophy.

Thus Mehboob khan ensured that most of his films reflected this anti capitalistic philosophy in some way or the others. That is how he made films like Roti, Mother India, Son of India etc. Bimal Roy too followed in his own way by making films like Naya Daur, and Dharmputra etc.

Today’s song is from an old film ‘Ek Hi Raasta’ (1939).

This film was made by Sagar Movietone and was directed by a young Mehboob Khan. This was his  last film with Sagar, because after this Sagar was merged with National studios and later on it was closed down forever. This proves that generally, family enterprises where it is a one man show, be it films or politics, does not last long. If the enterprise does not adapt  to changes or does not learn from its mistakes, its downfall is sure. Mehboob Khan grew big with Sagar. Mehboob was influenced by Nehru’s ideology and was his staunch supporter. It was a coincidence that Nehru died in the afternoon of 27th May 1964 and within 12 hours, Mehboob Khan too died in the early hours of 28th May 1964.

Today’s song is from the film Do Raaha-1952, about which not much is known- except whatever is given in the HFGK.The film was made under the banner of ‘Progressive Pictures,Bombay’. It was directed by Bal Chhabra and was produced by his elder brother Sujit Chhabra under their own banner. The cast of the film was Nalini Jayawant, Shekhar, K N Singh, Agha, Dewan Sharara, Jagdish Sethi and many more. The 8 songs of this film were written by Prem Dhawan-6 songs and one each by Sahir Ludhianvi and Josh Malihabadi. It seems, there was one more song ” Sab paise ki hai maya” sung by Shankar Dasgupta, S D Batish and Prem Dhawan. The song was also recorded but not included in the film. The music was by Anil Biswas.
