Today’s song is from the costume/stunt film Raj Darbar-1955. It was a partially coloured film. The film was directed by Balwant Bhatt and the music was by the king of melody-Chitragupt. Surprisingly, there was a duet song by Kishore kumar in this film. Normally he was not seen singing in this type of film. Today’s song is from the film Chand ki Duniya-1959.
Man has always been curious about the unknown matters like his future, after death existence or the various planets. Maybe this age-old desire promoted study of the Occult and the various Fortune telling sciences, everywhere in the world in different civilisations over thousands of years. Whether Fortune telling is a science or not is a matter of debate, but the fact remains that almost every person believes, at the back of his mind, that such sciences, in fact, were much developed in the early stages of mankind.

Today’s song is from the film Chhupa Rustom-1973.
This was a Dev Anand film. Once upon a time, when I was very very young, I was very fond of his every film. He looked so cute, handsome and a real film Hero ! As the years rolled by, I saw less and less films. The last film that I enjoyed in which Dev was a hero was, perhaps, Guide -1965. Thereafter Dev Anand’s cute looks started fading, age was showing on his face and probably on his brain too, because he refused to accept that he was no more a cute looking actor. The result was saddening. Further, he was adamant in writing his own film stories, directing them and acting also as a Hero.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Insaan-1952.
The year of 1952 – It was just 5 years since we got our Independence and only 2 years after we became a Sovereign Democratic Republic, totally and actually free from the last contact with the British Empire, like being called a ‘Dominion Republic’. The General Elections were over and a Congress Government, as expected, took over as the new ruler. As far as the film industry was concerned, there was a huge crowd of new producers, who had a lot of black money to invest. This increased the number of films, but the quality was the victim. The proportion of quantity and quality was inverse. Film federation or the Indian government was unable to control this influx of outsiders.

Today (26 January 2024) is Republic Day of India.
India became a republic on 26 January 1950. That was easily a red letter day in the history of Modern India. It was on this day that India decided to be a country that would be a democracy where each citizen, irrespective of his caste, creed, religion, gender, economic status etc would enjoy equality without discrimination. The country would be governed according to the acts of Indian constitution that was adopted on this date.

Today’s song is from a costume film ‘Raj Pratigya’ (1958).
This is yet another film, with a story of King and Queen. I have seen this film and have its story with me. Otherwise also, the film’s title and the cast are a clear giveaway enough to declare this film as a Raja-Rani film. The only difference is, this film’s story is based on the background of 2 warring kingdoms, Magadh and Malawa, which existed in olden times in India. After seeing such films, one gets the answer why and how the Mughals or the Europeans could win in India and managed to rule it despite the population being majority Hindus and the rulers in a disciplined minority. The majority was busy fighting among themselves rather than with the invaders jointly !

Shakespeare’s plays have been one of the important sources for adapting them in Hindi films since the beginning of the Indian film industry in 1913. However, since very few films produced and released during the silent film era survived, it is difficult to say how many silent films were based on Shakespeare’s plays. A research paper on Shakespeare on Screen by Dr. Joseph Koyippally has identified 8 silent films based on Shakespeare’s plays that were released between 1923-30.
