Hullo Atuldom
In one of his posts, around 10 years or so ago, Atulji had written (I am not sure of the exact words he had used) that when he spoke about some of the actors of yesteryears, even Amitabh Bachchan, to his young daughter he had to give reference ‘Abhishek Bachchan’s father’.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Beti’ (1941).
This film was made by Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Jayant Desai. The music was by Gyan Dutt. The film cast consisted of Khursheed, Vasanti, Arun Ahuja, E Bilimorea, Ghori, Kesari, Khatoon, Nagendra, Rewa Shankar etc. 1941 was the beginning of the second decade of the talkie films. Many actors, singers, MDs and directors who rolled over to talkie films from the silent era, slowly started retiring and the new generation took over slowly. Actors like Nagendra, Rewa Shankar, Ghori, Kesari, Khatoon, and Bilimorea who were in this film ended their careers in the next few years.

Another Summer Olympics comes along. Once again, Indians have their hopes raised.
And once again, most of these are dashed.
Indians take out their frustration on a few athletes/players — and get back to their normal lives in a few days. Every four years – rinse, repeat.
I’ve been seeing this routine since 1976.

1st August is the date when Meena Kumari was born as Mahjabeen Bano.
She had a career spanning 33 years, starting as a child artist in 1939. At a young age of 5 she became the bread-winner of her family. Fans of Meena Kumari know that she went on to adult roles from 1946 when she appeared in ‘Bachchon Ka Khel’ & ‘Duniya Ek Sarai’. ‘Baiju Bawra’ & ‘Parineeta’ helped her gain prominence as an actress. Till the late 1950s she had acted in films ranging from drama to comedy to fantasy before “Chiraag Kahaan Roshni Kahan”; “Main Chup Rahungi” & such other movies earned her ‘tragedy-queen’ sobriquet. Personally I liked her ‘chulbuli’ characters in “Miss Mary”, “Kohinoor”, “Azaad” etc.

Deepti Naval is known for her roles in parallel/experimental Hindi films. After watching a couple of her TV interviews, I have come to know that she is a multi-faceted personality. Apart from acting, Deepti Naval is a writer and director. She is also a poet, a painter, and a photographer. Probably, she is the first Indian American who has been associated with Hindi films in India.

Today’s song is from a religious film Ishwar Bhakti-1951. The other name for this film was ” Shani Mahatmya”.
There are certain words/phrases in our religion which terrorise the common innocent people, who have total faith but not much knowledge about their religion. But then, there are such people in almost every religion. On an average only about 10-15 % people in any religion will be found who have read their religious books completely. Most people tend to depend on the Pujaris, Mullas, Priests and other religious heads to spoon-feed them about their religion. Now don’t ask me how many of these religious heads have read their religious books !

Today (18 April 2023) is the remembrance anniversary of Khursheed Bano (14 april 1914-18 april 2001). She was active in Hindi movies right from 1931 when talkies films began. Her debut film was Madan Theatre, Calcutta’s “Laila Majnu”(1931). Incidentally a movie with the same title was made in 1931 in Bombay as well. 🙂
