When this blog was started more than three years ago, it used to be one song a day blog, and the song used to be of my own choice. With time, I started receiving farmaishes and I would try to comply with them. “Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein Ishaaraa Ho Gayaa”, this lovely melody remains etched in my heart, as my first introduction to a dashing young Dev Anand, as seen on a Doordarshan screening of the film CID (1956). Time would be sometimes early seventies, and as a pre teen kid I was in the home of a friend (we did not have a TV of our own), religiously attending the Sunday film session, that was the once a week diet of film viewing generally allowed to us kids.

“Chalti Ka naam Gaadi” (1958) was a brainchild of Kishore Kumar. Legend has it that Kishore Kumar produced this movie to get over his tax problems. He wanted to produce a movie that he hoped would flop at the box office and that would enable him to balance his accounts for income tax purposes. He gave away the rights of this movie to his secretary Anoop Sharma who is credited as the Producer of this movie. The movie was directed by Satyen Bose and the movie included the three Ganguly brothers namely Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar and Kishore Kumar as well as the would be wife of Kishore Kumar namely Madhubala.

Has anyone heard of a Hindi movie by the name “Black Tiger” (1960) ? I certainly had not. But just because I had not heard about it does not mean that this movie did not exist. This movie was very much in existence and it was a quintessential B grade movie. It was produced by an imaginatively named production house called Highway Pictures. The movie was directed by the legendary director of such movies, namely Akkoo. The “star cast” of this movie includes such B grade superstars as Nazma, Azad, Nadira, Habib, Sheikh etc.

Insaan Aur Shaitaan, a film from 1970, came in the time when Sanjeev Kumar had already moved into significant and leading roles in A grade films. Probably this films would be one of his last few commitments in the action thrillers of the B/C category where he was fighting off criminals and saving the honor of young ladies and the nation.
