Here is a Helen song with a difference.In this song, Helen is not performing a cabarat or even a mujra. Rather she is emoting like a “normal” actress. Yes, Helen had a big enough role in this movie called “Kahin Din Kahin Raat” (1968).

Think of Sheikh Mukhtar, the hero of so many ‘Dada’ and ‘Ustad’ movies, the proverbial angry young man of the 50s and 60s ‘B’ screen Hindi movies long before Amitabh got that tag in the 70s and 80s. Now think of the same he-man in a skirt dress and bob cut hair? And dancing the twist, and pat-a-cake, no less?

“Hamdard” (1953) is a movie that starred Nimmi,Shekhar, Smriti Biswas and others. The movie had some nice songs in it. I have discussed two songs from this movie in the past.

I had heard this song a lot during its time. this song was a regular song in Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation’s “aaphi ke geet” programme broadcast in the morning from 8 AM to 9 AM. In addition, this song was a popular loudspeaker song as well.

Party songs/club songs where a female dancer sings and dances became a staple diet of Hindi movies in 1950s. Geeta Dutt was one of the first (if not the first) singer who sang such songs. As for the actors on whom such songs were picturised, there were many, ranging from dancers (Cuckoo, for instance) to heroines (Geeta Bali, for instance). Quite a few of these songs became very popular.

By 1980s, the lyrics of Hindi movie songs had become much more functional and basic. In many cases, the songs of that era virtually dispensed with the need of any meaningful lyrics and managed with gibberish passing for lyrics.
