Though most Hindi movie songs draw their inspirations from indigenous sources (classical music, folk music etc) there are songs that are inspired from western music. In late 1950s, rock and roll music had caught up in Hindi movies in a big way and there were quite a few such songs in Hindi movies those days. Music directors like C Ramchandra and Vinod, to mention a few, were composing quite a few rock and roll kind of songs those days.

Most Hindi movie songs last for three to four minutes, but the lonngest songs often last two and even three times the durations of the normal length songs. These long songs are mostly qawwaalis. The qawwalis may last considerably, but they hold the listeners spell bound with their lyrics.

Here is a “roadside tamasha” song from “Biraadari” (1966). In this song Shashi Kapoor and Memmood, donning striped lungis 😀 give a vigorous and boisterous dance performance. Such dances are right up the alley of Mehmood, but even Shashi Kapoor gamely hangs on and manages to keep pace with Mehmood.

A couple of songs from “Pyaar Mohabbat” (1966) are the two longest pending farmaishes for this blog. And I was unable to post these songs since I could not locate these songs all these days. Moreover, I too was curious about these songs, since these songs were “new” for me.
