This is the story of a 16 year old boy born in Peshawar in a conservative Pathan family for whom the association with film industry was a strict taboo. The boy was attracted to Bombay (Mumbai) as a destination. While listening to some Hindi film songs in one of the shops in Peshawar, a few of his friends coaxed him to try his luck as an actor in Hindi film industry since he had a good face. The fascination for Bombay coupled with the remarks from his friends were sufficient motivational factors for this youngboy to leave ( rather run away from) Peshawar for Bombay some time in 1935. The young boy was Ghulam Mustafa Durrani (1919-1988), later known in the Hindi film industry as G M Durrani, the playback singer.

“Hum Log’ (1951) is a production from the banner of Ranjit Movietone, but more than that, it is a signature piece by Zia Sarhadi, who has written and directed this film. This film is one of the earlier examples of Neo-Realism in Indian Cinema, a school of cinematic expression that was pioneered in the west by directors such as Luis Bunuel (Spain), Vittorio DeSica (Italy), Luchino Visconti (Italy), Yasujiro Ozu (Japan) and Jean Renoir (France). Although the film did not have any commercial success, it still is considered as the cult classic in the genre of Neo-Realism in Indian Cinema.

This song is a wonderful fun song from the film Khel (1950). And a fitting finale, too. Of the nine songs in this film, eight are already posted here on this blog. This is the ninth song that is rare and obscure, so much so that it has not been posted on the internet yet. In the write up for the eighth song of this film published on this blog “Kahe Mujhse Jawaani Mere Dil Ki Kahaani” , Atul ji has mentioned that the one last song is yet to be discovered. That was almost two weeks ago. On searching through my collection, I am now able to locate this song; and it is now posted on YouTube.

By now I am coming round to the view that obscure B grade movies could well outnumber the well known A grade movies as far as old Hindi movies are concerned. Music of such movies could well turn out to be a treasure trove that has not yet been fully discovered. I continue to find one gem after another when I look for songs from such forgotten movies.

“Sunahre Qadam” (1966) is an obscure movie despite being of relatively recent vintage by the standards of this blog. This movie was a Saraswati Kala Mandir presentation. It was directed by Satish Nigam and its star cast consisted of names like Shashikala, Agha, Sabita Chatterjee, Randhir, Rehman who hardly held any star appeal to attract ordinary movie goers to the movie halls. So it should come as no surprise that the movie failed at the box office.
