Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

This blog has 78 songs composed by Sajjad Hussain and that leaves about 20 more Sajjad Hussain songs that are yet to be covered.

These remaining songs are rare songs that are difficult to find and they may be available only with private dedicated collectors. I had mentioned in one of my earlier posts that I had the privilege of meeting Mr Bakshshish Singh in Sudhir jee’s residence. He has a nice collection of old and obscure songs and he is ever willing to share them. While leaving, he left his portable hard disk with Sudhir jee for him to see what was useful for him. Next day, when I was again in Sudhir Jee’s residence, I looked at the contents of the hard disk and copied some of it as may fit in my pen drive.

1960 saw the release of the famous film ‘Bambai Ka Babu’. With Dev Anand and Suchitra Sen in the lead and music by SD Burman, this film did well to stay put in the memory of the viewers and listeners. In the same year, another ‘Bambai’ film was released, that seemed to have disappeared without making any impact, and there is nothing one hears about it.

In the sphere of Geeta Dutt’s non-filmy songs (NFS), I was aware of only one of her songs hauley hauley hawaayen doley during my younger days, thanks to the radio. Much later, I had bought 78 RPM record of this NFS sometime in early 70s. If I remember correctly, this record had ‘jamuna ke teer kaanhaa aao’ on the other side. So I became aware of one more NFS of her. Probably those days of early 50s, the singers will have to sing at least two NFS songs to bring out one 78 RPM record. With the advent of internet, we have access to some more of her NFS based on which I have a feeling that compared with other playback singers of her time like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Mukesh, Manna Dey etc, she has cut comparatively very few Hindi NFS discs. I found that none of her NFS other than the two I referred to above, were known to me though they are beautifully rendered by her. I have recently heard ‘ye hawaa ye fizaa ye bahaaren’ composed by V Balsara and I liked it very much.
