I used to get confused among singers where the name of the singer was mentioned as Kalyani or Miss Kalyani. Some songs were also accredited to Kalyani Das. Are they all the same or are they different singers? It was only after reading the interview of Kalyani Bai (Real name: Zarina) which appeared in Shishir Krishna Sharma’s Blog ‘beetehuedin’ some time in 2012 that I could differentiate between songs accredited as ‘Kalyani’ or ‘Miss Kalyani’ between Kalyani Bai and Kalyani Das. In our Blog, the songs sung by Kalyani Bai has been tagged as ‘Kalyani’ whereas songs sung by Kalyani Das have been tagged as such. So there is no same name confusion in the Blog for both the singers.

“Deewaali Ki Raat”(1956) produced by Vishandas Sapru and directed by Deepak Asha for V.A.R.Productions. The movie had Talat Mehmood, Roopmala, Shashikala, Gope, Motisagar, Neeta etc. in it.

The star cast included Dev Kumar, Sonia Sahani, Padma Khanna, Kamini Kaushal, Jayashri T, Anita Sinha, Indira, Dev Dutt, Sajjan, Sundar, Dhanraj, B Gopal, Dilip Dutt, Rajrani, Chacha, Mulchand, Deepakraj, Dweejendra Banerjee, Manjit Kumar, Prabhat Kumar, Mahindra kumar, Shyam Kumar, Dhruv Kumar, Satish etc.

In the 1930s and 40s, Hindi film industry attracted many well known poets and writers of Hindi/Urdu. Munshi Premchand joined Ajanta Cinetone and wrote story and screen-play for the film ‘Mazdoor’ (1934) in which he also played a cameo role. Dr Safdar ‘Aah’ Sitapuri, the Urdu poet and writer joined National Studios in 1939 and later Bombay Talkies as screen-play/dialogue writer and lyricist. Later, he also directed two Hindi films. Upendranath ‘Ashq’ joined Filmistan in 1944 as screen-play and dialogue writer. Josh Malihabadi, the Urdu poet joined Shalimar Studio in 1942 as dialogue writer and lyricist. Amritlal Nagar joined the film industry in 1941 as a screen-play/dialogue writer and lyricist. The list is not exhaustive.

“Amar Asha”(1947) was directed by V M Vyas for Sunrise Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Paro Devi, Umakant, Sitara, Ghulam Mohammad (actor), Pratima Devi, Pandey, Amir Bano, Babu Raje, Radha, Ma Wazir, Mumtaz etc in it.

The runaway success of musical films like ‘Khazaanchi’ (1941), ‘Basant’ (1942), ‘Kismet’ (1943), ‘Tansen’ (1943) and ‘Rattan’ (1944) seem to have attracted, many new music directors to join the Hindi film industry in the 1940s. But only a few of them could climb the ladder of success to reach among the top music directors and elongate their successful musical carrier in the 1950s and beyond. Most of new music directors vanished into thin air after composing songs for very few films.

HATIMTAI (1947) was produced under the banner of Fine Arts Productions and was directed by G R Sethi. The star cast included Kamal Kapoor, Vanmala, Bikram Kapoor, Auzurie, Chandanbala, Hamid (Ajit), Ameerbai Karnataki, Kashinath etc.

Never before I had to piece together so little information from so many sources about a song that I liked so much as in case of “Ut’re jo zindagi teri gehraaiyon men hum” from Pratibha (1984).

Today (31 july 2016) is a day that all music lover know only too well. It seems like yesterday when we heard the unexpected news that Rafi was no more. He was just 55 years old at that time and he still had many years of singing career ahead of him. In a way, his demise signified the hastening of the end of the golden era of HFM, an era which had begun when his himself was making his mark as a playback singer in 1940s.
