Today’s song is from film ‘Pehla Aadmi’ from 1950.

India became an independent nation on 15th August, 1947. It saw the end of about 100 years of protest, riots, mutinies and revolutionary attacks on the British Raj, who had ruled us for so many years – 190 years, to be exact. That is after Robert Clive won the battle of Plassey in 1757. Besides political upheaval, independence had different impact on different people in India.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Milan’ (1946).

Bengali people, in general, are fond of reading. The literacy percentage of Bengal during last century and before that has been quite noteworthy. The literate population of Bengal is divided in two parts. One is Bhadralok– a term used to indicate upper and middle class – affluent and educated people; and the other is Madhabit (or what we call a middle class in rest of India). Both these classes of society in Bengal were patrons of books. In addition, Bengal also boasts of a large number of very famous authors. Eminent writers like Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chatterji, Sarat Chandra Chatterji, Sunil Gangopadhyaya, Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay, Satyajit Ray, Mahashweta Devi, Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, Shardendu Bandopadhyay, Humayun Ahmed, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Michael Madhusudan, Manik Bandopadhyay, Premendra Mitra, Badal Sircar, Sukumar Rai, Jibanand Das, Rajnikant Sen and many others were, and continue to be popular in Bengal.

Todays song is from an old film of the 30s – ‘Sunehara Sansar- from 1936.

Songs from films made in the 30s are difficult to find. If you find a song of a film of your choice, you are a lucky person. Sometimes, as a fluke, such songs are encountered and your day is made. Luckily, there are collectors from India and Pakistan, who collect songs from various sources and upload them on You Tube for the benefit of music lovers and history students. Since no collector ever discloses his sources, it is difficult to know from where the song has been taken. Actually it hardly matters as long as it is not used for commercial purpose. Such 70-80 year old songs are no one’s personal property in any case, once they are on public domain. The uploaders are also aware of it.

There was a time when the films made in Hindi could be classified easily as A grade, B grade and C grade films. A grade films were those made by big and famous banners with top class actors and leading music directors. B grade films were those made with second rung of actors, director and music directors. C grade films were those films which were made by not so famous banners, almost unknown actors directors and composers. Usually C grade films used to be action/stunt films, made on shoestring budgets, having a fixed story line resembling Tarzan, Hercules or Hollywood action films of Robin Hood, with the background of a jungle, tribe people, king-queen-wicked wazir and similar stories.

Today’s song is from film Azaadi-35.

It is always a pleasure for me to write on films and songs of the 1930s and the 1940s. It is a different world altogether and traversing on the path of these decades is easy, for there is no crowd here. Not many writers are interested in discussing songs from the 1930s in details.

There are several reasons for this. First and foremost is lack of information. Considering what our love for recording history of old films and the artistes is, one has to be lucky to a great extent to have enough material to write about, in the first place. Secondly, most artistes of the 1930s and early 1940s were the lot carried forward or brought forward from the Silent Era. By the end of the first 10 years, most of these brought forward artistes went into oblivion and new force of artistes entered the film industry.

I congratulate all our readers on the auspicious occasion of this 69th REPUBLIC DAY of our country (26 january 2018).

Seriously, how many of us really know the definition of a Republic ? As per the Oxford Dictionary, “A Republic is a sovereign country, which is organised with a form of Government in which the power resides with elected individuals, who exercise power according to the rule of the law “. In short, it is a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

After India achieved freedom in 1947, some films on Patriotic themes were made. ‘Andolan’ (1951) was one such film. Made by Harnam Motwane, under his banner Motwane Ltd, this film is labelled as a ‘historic’ film by HFGK. That may be because in this film the history of India’s independence struggle from 1885 to 1947 is shown with the documentaries and actual footage (with a basic film story, of course) from short films made by Films Division and some film companies like Krishna and Kohinoor films.

Today, 23rd January 2018 is the 121st Birth Anniversary of India’s best known revolutionary- Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. His life story and name is known to every Indian. It is not only very inspiring, but is very motivating as well. Unfortunately Netaji did not get the kind of help or support he needed and deserved for his Military action, from Indian politicians of his times. Netaji’s philosophy clashed with the Non-Violence policy espoused by Gandhi and his Congress Party. He pursued his dream single handedly. It is once in a Century that such a person is born. My respectful obeisance to Netaji.

On this occasion, here is a song describing his life which was nothing but a life of Balidaan or sacrifice.

Today’s song is from film ‘Sheroo’ (1957).

The lead pair in this film was Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jayawant. This was quite a popular pair in the 1950s decade. They did 11 films together. Their association started from film ‘Sangram’ (1950) and the last time they came together was after 16 years, in film ‘Toofan Mein Pyar Kahaan’ (1966). In Bombay, their bungalows were in Union Park, Chembur, opposite to each others. Saadat Hasan Manto, in one of his books mentions about their mutual attraction and a failed plan to elope and marry.
