Somewhere in the late 2011 AK ji, of Songsofyore.com, had written on this Blog about the importance of NFS. After reading his views, I too wrote a rather lengthy comment supporting the inclusion of NFS on this Blog. Our contention was that, prior to Hindi Film Music becoming popular all over India, it was those ghazals, Geets and Bhajans, privately sung and recorded by various artists which had ruled the tastes of music lovers. In fact many famous singers had recorded NFS in the beginning phase of their singing careers. Some names are Talat Mehmood, Saigal, Pankaj Mullick, Jagmohan and Juthika Roy !

Today’s song is from the film Pagle-1950.

The film was made by Markari Productions, Bombay. It was directed by Pratima Dasgupta. The music director was V.G.Bhatkar aka Snehal Bhatkar. The cast of the film was Begum Para, Madhuri, Jahagirdar, Pratima Devi, Mubarak, David, Agha, Cuckoo and some others. I have neither seen this film nor I could get my hands on its story, but I believe this was a dual story of a failed love and true love pair.

Today’s song is from the film Bade Bhaiya-1951.

From the title it seemed to be a family drama, but in reality this was a love story of 2 brothers, with the background of a Carnival and its various shows. This is what I call a misleading title !

The film was made by Super Pictures, Bombay, owned by the film’s Director Aspy Irani. The Parsi community of Bombay made a lot of contribution to the early cinema. Remember that the very first Talkie film made in India was by Ardeshir Irani, a Parsi who owned a premier studio and a filmmaking organisation -The Imperial Film company, Bombay. Over a period, the Parsis found other interests and their participation in filmmaking reduced. However, some of the great and memorable actors and directors like Sohrab Modi, the Billimorea brothers, Pearl Padamsee, Boman Irani etc kept the Persian Presence in Hindi films going.

Today’s song is from a failed, potent comedy film Andher Nagari Chaupat Raja-1955.

The film was made by Chitramahal, Bombay and produced by Ashalata Biswas- ex wife of Music Director Anil Biswas. Though she had separated from Anil Biswas in 1954 itself, she continued using his surname till she was in films. The film was directed by Shamim Bhagat, about whom my guess is that he may be Ashalata Biswas’s brother. Her name before marriage was Meharunnisa Bhagat. The Music Director of this film was Avinash Vyas, ably assisted by Sanmukh babu Upadhyaya, who later on became an independent MD for film Lalkar-1956. He gave music to only 7 Hindi films, mostly B and C grade films. The cast of the film was Chitra, Amarnath, Gope, Umadevi and many others.

Today’s song is a chorus song from the Mythological film Hanuman Patal Vijay-1951.

I liked to see and enjoyed Mythological films. This was primarily due to the exposure to such films since early childhood. Thanks to the elders in our huge joint family, I got appointed as their caretaker who would take a group of elders to see such films. That is why from childhood I developed a religious mindset. However, my father ensured to impress on me that Religion is strictly a personal matter and one must decide how much importance one should give to Religion in one’s life. I have followed this principle till today and I treat all religions with the same reverence. Excess or exhibition of Religion must be avoided. This is my opinion.

Today’s song is from the film Alladin ka Beta-1955.

Can there be a child who has not read the story of Alibaba or Alladin or Sindbad the sailor ? All of us have read these stories in our younger days, but not many know that these stories are from ‘Arabian Nights’ or ‘The 1001 Nights’.

These are collections of stories from West and south Asia. The history of this book is very complex.Suffice to say that it is a composite work and that the earliest tales came from India and Persia. Perhaps in the 8th century, these were translated into Arabic and authors from every generation went on adding stories to it. However, the basic Frame story remains the same for centuries.

Today’s song is from the film Babuji-1950.

The film was made by Uday Productions, Bombay. It was a regular stunt film from the stable of Master Bhagwan – who had done a great job of keeping this genre alive through the 1940’s. In the beginning of the 1950s, Bhagwan turned to making social films, with the Blockbuster musical film Albela-1951.

Bhagwan was elated highly with the unexpected success of his foray into the social Genre and he went on making such social films. He had, however, not realised that 10 Albela was a novelty for his captive audience and 2) 75 % success of Albela was due to superb music by C.Ramchandra, who was at the pinnacle of his career that time !

Today’s songs from an unknown or a less known film – Paisa-1941. This was the first film, having the first word ‘Paisa’ in its title. After this film, every decade, there were films having the word Paisa in its title. In 1956 – Paisa hi Paisa, in 1957- Paisa, in 1969- Paisa ya Pyar, in 1974- Paise ki Gudiya, in 1985- Paisa yeh Paisa, in 1992- Paise ke Peechhe, in 2001- Paisewali, and in 2004- Paisa Vasool. Obviously, the importance of Paisa had established itself in the film industry !

Film Paisa-1941 was one of those Bilingual films (Hindi and Marathi), which just came and went without making a noise. Even the Marathi version, it seems, had the same fate. I have not seen this film and actually came to know about this film only after I purchased the HFGK Volume-2.

Today’s song is a duet from the film Aage Kadam-1943.

The greatest problem with the old films is that many times information on some films is not available at all. Even the film booklet is not available. All that is known about them is what is given in the HFGK. Some of the actors and actresses are not familiar and to get their information is almost impossible. While writing about their songs, this becomes a challenge. We have to then discuss whatever is available at hand.

Today’s song is from a dubbed film Ek Tha Raja-1951.

I consider myself a mixture of south and marathi culture. From childhood, I grew up in an atmosphere which was truly cosmopolitan – in Hyderabad state. Exposure to south customs and following a Marathi lifestyle. My paternal grandparents stayed with us. My father, uncles and aunts addressed my grandmother as ‘Amma’, a typical way of calling mother in southern style. However, I called my mother as “Aai”, like a Marathi kid !

To be a multilingual person is good. Knowing more languages-not just knowing, but speaking many languages has its own advantages. I had the built in advantage of having been born in a Multilingual state of Hyderabad. Starting with Urdu, I soon learnt Marathi(Mother tongue), Hyderabadi and Pure Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. Because of my father, I learnt Sanskrit, but could not master it, though I am well conversant in it. After coming to Bombay,I learnt Gujarati so well that I can read Gujarati papers, books and E Mails etc.
