The decade of the 1950s was a time when, having got our independence in 1947, the whole nation was now busy reconstructing our country to our choice. This was the time when family values, importance of joint families, religion, law and order, Nehru’s socialistic pattern etc. were being reestablished. With all this, the turmoil in the society could not be isolated. It had its effects on the social atmosphere, markets, businesses, housing and of course the films.

Today’s song is from Raj Kapoor’s flop film Baawra-1950.
When I started collecting information on this film, I got a Zero at every attempt that I made to get its story. Disappointed, I left that point and wanted to know more about the film’s director G. Rakesh -a name I had never heard in the last many years. I was wondering that a film of Raj Kapoor and an unknown director ? कुछ तो गडबड है !

Today’s song is from an extremely obscure film Bombay-1949.
This film is so obscure that the names associated with this film, from the production House – National Artists, Bombay – to names from other heads like the Director. Music Directors (4 MDs), the Lyricists to its cast members (except Shashikala, Mirza Musharraf and Bhudo Advani) all are almost never heard of and are least known !

Today’s song is from the film ‘Anaath Ashram’ (1937). This film was made by New Theaters, Calcutta.
During the period from 1931 to 1955. New Theaters was one of the premiere film production companies of India. This was not only a commercial organization, but also a school for developing new talents in the fields of acting, direction, cinematography, editing, sound recording, costume designing and other departments of film making. Almost all who learnt from here, became big names in their later careers. It was here that the artists were encouraged to become editors from cinematographers, and directors from editors. Names like Nitin Bose and Bimal Roy are enough to prove this point.

Today’s song is from a dubbed film Jeevan Nauka-1952.
A cursory look at the Film Index book tells us that that the word JEEVAN is a favourite with film makers. As many as 36 Talkie films were made till 2012 with the word Jeevan at the Title’s beginning. Surprisingly I did not find a single Silent movie title with this word. This of course is not an indication in any way, because silent films used to have several titles in different states for the same film. (Just for the records, the word most used in the Hindi film titles happens to be ” Ek”, which is used in 206 film titles from 1931 to 2012 ! ).

Today’s song is from an old film Charnon ki Dasi – 1941.
This was a bilingual film, in Hindi and Marathi (as पायाची दासी ). It was made by Atre Pictures, Bombay. The producer was the owner of the banner itself – Acharya Pralhad Keshav Atre. The film was directed by Gajanan Jahagirdar, who also played an important role in the film. The Lyricist was Pt. Anand Kumar and the Music Director was Annasaheb Mainkar. The cast included Master Avinash, Vanmala, Durga khote, Gajanan Jahagirdar, Kusum deshpande, Kelkar, Prem Anand (brother of the lyricist), Ramesh and many others.

Today’s song is from a stunt film Baboo ji-1950.
Oh my God ! Can’t believe it !! My 1200th Post !!!
Honestly, more than Joy, I am amazed how I have reached this stage. Entering this field was never planned by me. When I detached myself from working with my Pharma background finally in 2008 ( I had retired in 1998, but I ran my Consultancy Company till another 10 years ), I had no plans of what I was going to do in my free time.

Today’s song is from a special film – Gunsundari-1948.
I call this film a ‘Special’ film because this is one film in which the simple story was so original, interesting and so much a representative of the changing times in the country that this story inspired films in almost every language in India from the late 1920’s decade till even today (albeit in modern avatar !).

Today’s song is from an obscure film called Sapna-1952. I had not heard its name till I purchased the HFGK in 2011 !
The film was made by the Producer Kishor Sahu, under the banner of Hindustan Chitra, Bombay. The film’s director was Kidar Sharma, who was in the second half of his career. Out of his 36 Directorial ventures Sapna-52 was his 20th film. The famous , creative and hard working Kidar Nath Sharma was slowly losing his sheen in direction. Maybe he found difficulty in dealing with the changing scenario of the Hindi films in the 50’s decade. I have his autobiographical book ” The one and the Lonely Kidar Sharma” which is indeed an informative and interesting book. It gives a peep into the film scene of the 30’s and the 40’s as well as the famous Studio system.
