The Marathi film, ‘Mee Vasantrao’ (2022) is a biopic on Dr Vasantrao Deshpande, the Hindustani classical vocalist who was reluctant to take this on the profession level during his younger days due to domestic compulsion. His close friends included P L Deshpande, Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Begum Akhtar, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. After he left the Govt service, Vasantrao attained the fame mainly as an actor-singer in many Marathi musical plays. In the later part of his life, Vasantrao devoted mainly as a Hindustani classical vocalist.

About a decade ago, I had watched a Marathi film, ‘Katyaar Kaljat Ghusali’ (2015) in the very first week when it was released in a multiplex. The literal meaning of the film’s title in English is ‘a dagger speared the heart’. It was near houseful crowd with an overwhelming majority being senior citizens. Probably, most of them may have watched the play in the theatre during their younger days and they may be curious to watch in the cinematic form. The film still lingers in my mind, and I have watched all its songs umpteen times. It is one of the recent viewing of the songs from the film that has prompted me to write this article.

Geetanjali Pictures of Hemant Kumar had tasted success in the genre of suspense/mystery thriller in ‘Bees Saal Baad’ (1962) and ‘Kohra’ (1964). The banner had also produced ‘Faraar’ (1965), ‘Bibi Aur Makaan’ (1966) and ‘Khamoshi’ (1970) without much success at the box office. After a decade of the box office success of ‘Bees Saal Baad’ (1962), Hemant Kumar tried to repeat the success formula in ‘Bees Saal Pahele’ (1972). He introduced his son, Ritesh Mukherjee (real name: Jayanta Mukherjee, husband of Moushumi Chatterjee) in the lead role.

‘Maan Apmaan’ (1979) was produced and directed by N V Deshpande. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Kanan Kaushal, Sushma Shiromani, Usha Solanki, Gajanan Jagirdar, Dhumal. Mohan Choti, Ratnamala, Asit Sen, Jayshree T, Shammi, Vishwa Mehra, Neelam etc. As per IMDb, the film was in the making since 1968 with Sanjeev Kumar and Kanan Kaushal (who, at that time, were yet to get established as successful actors). The film got delayed and at one time it was almost shelved. It was only when Sanjeev Kumar became a star and Kanan Kaushal came into limelight with her box office hit film, ‘Jai Santoshi Mata’ (1975), the film was revived, reshot and released in August 1979. The film was dubbed in Gujarati also.

The cast included Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee, Simran, Suraj Sharma, Kaveri Seth, Utsavi Jha, Santhy, Jatin Goswami, Gandharv Dewan, Chandan Roy, Anurag Arora, Devika Shahani, Shriharsh Sharma, Talat Aziz, Vinod Nagpal, Danish Sood, Tanvi Rao, Abhinav Bhattacharjee, Tripti Sahu, Nargis Nandal, Varun Narayan, Kanishk Seth, Puja Sarup, Deepak Bagga, Kavita Seth, Angad Sharma etc. Amol Palekar made a guest appearance in the film. The film was released on OTT platforms on March 23, 2023.

‘Naukri’ (1978) was produced under the banner of R S J Productions and was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The cast included Rajesh Khanna, Zaheera and Raj Kapoor in main roles supported by Om Shivpuri, Pratima Devi, Tom Alter, V Gopal, Meena Roy, Vijay Sharma, Aarti, Lalita Kumari, Master Akbar etc. Nadira, A K Hangal, Jayshree T and Younus Parvez made the friendly appearances and Keshto Mukherjee, Padma Khanna and Deven Varma made guest appearances in the film. The film was released in the theatres on June 09, 1978. The film’s story was written by Salil Chowdhury who also provided the background music.

‘Amrit Manthan’ (1934) was a bilingual film in Marathi and Hindi, produced under the banner of Prabhat Film Company and was directed by V Shantaram. The cast included Nalini Tarkhad, Sureshbabu Mane, Shanta Apte, Chandramohan, Kelkar, Shankar Kulkarni, Varde, Umakant Desai etc. Chandramohan made a debut with this film. It was Shanta Apte’s first film with an adult role. Keshavrao Bhole debuted in this film as a music director. This was the first sound film which ran for more than 25 weeks in Mumbai’s Krishna theatre in regular shows. Prabhat Film Company’s distributor, Baburao Pai was the first to coin the word ‘Silver Jubilee’ with reference to this film. The film was shown at the International Film Festival, Venice.
