In the hierarchy of Hindi film actors, apart from lead and supporting actors, there is one category of actors who falls between supporting actors and extras. One may call them ‘small role actors’. I found it difficult to identify many actors in this category especially when some of them would be uncredited in the films. One such actor is Ram Sethi whom I had seen in some films of 1970s and 80s. It is only when I joined this Blog in 2011, I came to know that Pyarelal of ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978) was Ram Sethi. I have also seen him with Amitabh Bachchan in some more films like ‘Laawaaris’ (1981), ‘Yaaraana’ (1981), ‘Kaalia’ (1981), ‘Namak Halaal’ (1982) and ‘Jaadugar’ (1989).

I had discussed in my earlier articles, a couple of lesser-known actors like Shaam Kumar and Keshav Rana, who have worked in a large number of films but mostly remained unidentified for the general film audience. But their faces were known to them even though they may appear in the films in small roles or sidekicks. One of such actors was Kamal Mehra.

2 December 2023 was the 9th Remembrance Day of Deven Verma (23/10/1937 – 02/12/2014) who had taken comical performances in Hindi films on a different level. Gulzar had said about Deven Verma that he was not a comedian but an actor. I think, he must have made this statement with his experience of working with him in ‘Angoor’ (1982). His performance was devoid of buffoonery but was loaded with gentle humour, wit, and pun. His wife, Roopa Ganguly had said that her husband was a witty person in his real life.

‘Saaz aur Sanam’ (1971) was the last feature film under the Wadia Movietone banner. It was also the last film for J B H Wadia as a director. The film’s shooting started in 1970 with then newcomers, Pramendra and Rekha in the lead. The other cast in the film included Suresh Chatwal, Poornima, Sapru, Ratan Kumar, Bhramachari, Master Bhagwan, Asit Sen and Arvind (debut). Rajni Bala made a guest appearance. The film was partly shot in Goa just a few years after India took over the territory from Portugal. It is said that J.B.H. Wadia had promised a teenager Rekha that he would introduced her in Hindi films. He kept his promise with this film. However, Rekha signed her the first Hindi film, ‘Saawan Bhaadon’ (1970).

Kaun kambakht hai jo bardaasht karne ke liye peeta hai… main to peeta hoon ke bas saans le sakoon.

This famous dialogue in the film, ‘Devdas’ (1955) was written by Rajinder Singh Bedi, the Urdu short stories writer, playwright and the novelist. In the aftermath of the partition, he had landed in Hindi film industry mainly for the betterment of his financial conditions apart from creative contributions to the extent possible. But once he knew the realities that the film writers have no much freedom, Rajendra Singh Bedi turned producer-director in Hindi films to fulfil his creative desire.

Ayushman Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar were paired together for the first time in ‘Dam Laga Ke Haisha’ (2014) which I have already discussed on the Blog. Their chemistry clicked from the very first film together which seems to have been liked by the audience as per the box office indicator. ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ (2017) is their second film together. Other supporting cast included Seema Bhargav, Neeraj Sood, Chittaranjan Tripathy, Brijendra Kala, Supriya Shukla, Sanjay Singh etc.

Hindi film audience may be acquainted with Pearl Padamsee (1931 – 24/04/2000) for her good performances in Basu Chatterjee’s films, ‘Khatta Meetha’ (1977) and ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979). She was also seen in Shyam Benegal’s ‘Junoon’. But more than an actor in Hindi films, she was an eminent theatre personality who, in colloboration with Alyque Padamsee, propped up a vibrant English theatre in Mumbai for over 4 decades.

While discussing the films, ‘Gharaonda’ (1977) and ‘Dooriyaan’ (1979), the name of Bhimsain gets noticed. Both these films were produced and directed by him whose specialisation was in animation films. His foray into feature film was a journey into uncharted waters for him. In the event, both these films became cult-classics. Thereafter, he made only one Hindi film, ‘Tum Laut Aao’ (1983) and bid goodbye to Hindi films. He devoted rest of his life in improving the standard of animation films in India. I have come across about a dozen of videos on the development of animation films in India and all of these mention about the contributions Ram Mohan and Bhimsain in the field of animation films in India.

Remembering Bhimsain Khurana (24/11/1936 – 17/04/2018), a devoted animation filmmaker whose 87th birth anniversary falls today.

Producer-director-writer, Basu Chatterjee is one of the earliest filmmakers who brought up middle-class related issues on the big screen with films like ‘Saara Aakaash’ (1969), ‘Piya Ka Ghar’ (1971), ‘Rajnigandha’ (1974), ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ (1975), ‘Chitchor’ (1976), ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979) and many more. He has also made film with other genres of which ‘Kamla Ki Maut’ (1989) was critically acclaimed. But the film failed at the box office. He went back to his favourite genre of middle class family drama with light comedy, and made for Doordarshan a telefilm, ‘Hamaari Shaadi’ (1990). About 3 months back, Doordarshan uploaded the film in digital format on one of the video sharing platforms, with improved audio-visual quality.
