In my last article, I had made a passing reference to the film, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ (1992) in the context of the prelude music of one of the songs of the film which is the inspiration for the prelude music of the song that was discussed in the aforesaid article. This film suddenly reminded me of its director, Mansoor Khan who had successfully directed ‘Qayaamat Se Qayaamat Tak’ (1988) and some more. From his filmography, he directed his last film, ‘Josh’ (2000) and was the co-producer of ‘Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa’ (2008). It is a rare instance for a film director who has successfully directed four films in a row and vanished from the film industry. It was an interesting quest for me to know as to why he shunned the film industry.

After the box office success of the Tamil film, ‘Thevar Magan’ (1992), written and produced by Kamal Hasan with Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Hasan, Revathi, Gautami and Nasser in the main roles, Kamal Hasan decided its remake in Hindi with himself in the lead role and Dilip Kumar in Sivaji Ganesan’s role. It was his intense desire to work with Dilip Kumar. However, Dilip Kumar declined to work in the film as he had almost retired from the films. So, Kamal Hasan kept the Hindi remake of the film in the backburner until he sold the film’s rights to his friend, Priyadarshan for its remake in Hindi as ‘Viraasat’ (1997).(Source: Hindustan Times, May 29, 2022).

William Shakespeare’s plays such as ‘Othello’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Hamlet’, ‘Romeo And Juliet’, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ’12th Night’, The Comedy of Errors’ etc have been adapted in Hindi films. These Shakespearian plays have romance, emotions, tragedy, melodrama, actions etc and Hindi mainstream filmmakers thrive on such ingredients in the film. The most popular Shakespeare’s play which have been adapted for Hindi films is ‘Romeo and Juliet’. There may be at least a dozen Hindi films adapted and inspired from this play. From the summary version of this play which I have read, two important aspects in the play emerge. First, the lovers are from two different feuding families who desperately try to separate them. Second, from the incipient stage of their love, there are strong indications that they are not going to be united and at the end, they die as doomed lovers. So, the adapted films need to have these two important aspects to qualify as a fair adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The viewers must feel that it is tragic love story from start to end. Insofar as Hindi adapted films are concerned, I feel that Jaddan Bai’s ‘Romeo and Juliet (1947), directed by her son, Akhtar Hussain with her daughter, Nargis playing the role of Juliet, can be said to be the first version in Hindi film with an earnest degree of adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. In fact, this film has accredited William Shakespeare as the ‘story writer’. Films such as ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’ (1981) and ‘Qayaamat Se Qayaamat Tak’ (1988), also fulfill this criteria.

There are some prominent Hindi film actors whose names are mainly associated with ‘middle of the road’ and ‘off-beat’ cinemas though they have also worked in mainstream Hindi films. The names that comes to my mind are Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Girish Karnad, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Dipti Naval etc. Almost all of them made their Hindi film debut under the direction of Shyam Benegal. I was not aware that Rajeshwari Sachdev was also one of such actors until recently while checking her filmography. She has worked on stage, television and films. She is also a singer and a dancer.

In my last article, I had discussed Basu Chatterjee’s film, ‘Gudgudee’ (1997) which was inspired from a Hollywood film, ‘The Seven Year Itch’ (1955). In this article, I have taken up for discussion yet another film of Basu Chatterjee which was inspired from a Hollywood film, ‘The Fortune Cookie’ (1966). The film is ‘Laakhon Ki Baat’ (1984). The film was produced and directed by Basu Chatterjee. The star cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Farooq Shaikh, Anita Raj, Anjali Sen, Utpal Dutt, Pinchoo Kapoor, Dinesh Hingoo, Subbiraj, Javed Khan, Bhagwan Sinha etc. Neither the name of the storywriter nor the acknowledgement of the inspiration for the film was mentioned in the credit titles of film.

In the 1970s, Basu Chatterjee was one of those Hindi film directors who made films on the stories which a majority of the filmi audience could relate to their own every day life. Starting with ‘Saara Aakaash’ (1969), he made the classic films such as ‘Rajanigandha’ (1974), ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ (1975), ‘Chitchor’ (1976), ‘Khatta Meetha’ (1977), ‘Swaami’ (1977), ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979), ‘Shaukeen’ (1982) etc. But in 1990s and thereafter, Basu Chatterjee seems to have lost his magic touch to his ‘middle of the road’ cinemas.
