Today, November 2nd is the 128th birth anniversary of the producer-director-actor, Sohrab Modi (02/11/1897 – 28/01/1984) who was one of the pioneers of Hindi film industry with sincerity embedded in his works. What all I know about him through the articles and interviews is that the filmmaking was his passion. He developed his own art of dialogue delivery in chaste Urdu, thanks to his childhood spent in Rampur where he did his early schooling. His dialogue delivery became his hallmark in the films.
After completion of his matriculation examination, Sohrab Modi sought guidance from the principal of his school as to what type of career he should persue. The principal said that hearing to the quality of his voice, he should either become a politician or an actor. He chose to be an actor. In this context, Sohrab Modi shared a trivia that when his film. ‘Sheesh Mahal’ (1950) was released at Minerva theatre in Mumbai, he observed that one of the persons seated in the audience had dozed off. He called the theatre manager to take him out and refund his ticket price assuming that he was not keeping well. However, the theatre manager reported back to him that the person was visually impaired and he had come to the theatre only to listen to Sohrab Modi’s dialogues. ‘Jeewan Jyoti’ (1976) was produced under the banner of AVM Productions and was directed by Murugan Kumaran. The cast included Vijay Arora and Bindiya Goswami in the lead roles with the supporting cast of Rakesh Pandey, A K Hangal, Sulochana Chatterjee, Sudhir, Dinesh Hingoo, Om Shivpuri, Satyen Kappu, Dulari, Bhanumathi, Jayamalini, Halam, Ritu Kamal etc. Bindiya Goswami made her debut with this film. The film was a remake of a National Film Award winner Telugu film, ‘Mutyala Muggu’ (1975).

‘Khoon Aur Sazaa’ (1985) was produced by K K Talwar and was directed by Hari Prasad Reddy. The cast included Girsh Karnad, Dilip Dhawan, Swaroop Sampat, Amrish Puri, Jagdeep, Prema Narayan, Dalip Tahil, Seema Deo, Kalpana Iyer, Piloo Wadia, Jalal Agha etc. Producer, K K Talwar is the maternal uncle of Rajesh Khanna who started as an associate producer of Rajesh Khanna’s film, ‘Roti’ (1974). Thereafter, he had turned producer with ‘Aashiq Hoon Bahaaron Ka’ (1977), ‘Sharda’ (1981) and ‘Baazi’ (1984) before he produced the film under discussion. This is the only Hindi film of Hari Prasad Reddy as a director.

‘Shaque’ (1976) was a psychological suspense thriller, jointly produced by N B Kamat with Vikas Desai and was jointly directed by Aruna-Vikas (Arunaraje Patil and Vikas Desai). The cast included Vinod Khanna and Shabana Azmi in the lead roles supported by Utpal Dutt, Bindu, Arvind Deshpande, Suhas Bhalekar with Farida Jalal and Durga Khote making their guest appearances. This was Aruna-Vikas first film as the director who had started their filmy career as editor and advertising filmmaker.

‘Kathha’ (1982) was produced by Suresh Jindal and was directed by Sai Paranjpe who also wrote screenplay and dialogues. The cast included Farook Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval, Arun Joglekar, Bal Karve, Vasudev Palande, Shirish Limaye, Leela Mishra, Suhasini Deshpande, Jyotsana Karyekar, Yatin Karyekar, Nitin Sethi, Mushtaq Shaikh, Reeta Rani Kaul, Winnie Paranjpe-Joglekar, Arun Varnekar etc. While Mallika Sarabhai made a guest appearance, Jalal Agha, Valerie Agha, Tinu Anand, Sudha Chopra and Sarika made their friendly appearances in the film. Most of the supporting actors of the film belonged to Marathi and Hindi theatres.

‘Mast’ (1999) was a romantic fantasy film which was produced and directed by Ramgopal Varma. The cast included Urmila and Aftab Shivdasani (debutant) in the lead roles supported by Dalip Tahil, Smita Jaykar, Govind Namdeo, Antara Mali, Niraj Vora, Raju Mavani, Suhas Bhalekar, Rajpal Yadav (debutant) etc.
As admitted by Ramgopal Varma in an interview with rediff.com just before the release of the film, during his younger days, he had an obsession with Sridevi. In the later years, he felt that most of the teenagers may be fantasising in their minds about their obsessions with actors. So, he felt that this obsession with an actor can be made into a musical romantic film. Ramesh Khatkar and Vinod Ranganathan jointly wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues for the film based on Ramgopal Varma’s own experiences.

Recently, I came across the film ‘Hari Bhari’ (2000) when I was scrolling through the filmography of Shyam Benegal. After going through the details of the film, I thought that this may be a documentary film because the film was produced by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and National Film Development Corporation (NDFC). The title of the film which in English means ‘fertility’ reinforced my assumption of a documentary film on family planning. The film had Shabana Azmi, Rajit Kapur, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Nandita Das, Surekha Sikri, Seema Bhargav and other actors who have been usually associated with Shyam Benegal films. The duration and the songs in the film created a doubt in me whether it was really a documentary film. So, I decided to watch the film at least for the sake of its songs.
