The versatility of one voice has been unmatched in the annals of Hindi film music. A voice that is a match for any emotion, from one end of the spectrum to another. A voice that renders gaiety and fun as effortlessly as sadness and regrets of life. A voice that could woo the lady love and call out to the Almighty God with the conviction that one actually strains the hearing, expecting an answer come back from the heavens. A voice that has the capability to merge itself into any personality so totally and unobtrusively that the listener could never separate the voice from the character. That is the voice of Rafi Saab, a divine gift that dwelt on this earth for single lifetime, and left behind a legacy that would span an eternity. It is indeed a matter of good fortune to be born in this era, and be touched by the voice of this marvelous, unearthly tenor – a sound that appears maybe once in an aeon.

This selection is from the 1964 Gemini production Zindagi. This film had a very good star line up, as in Rajendra Kumar, Rajkumar, Vijayantimala, Prithviraj Kapoor, Lila Chitnis, Mehmood, Jayant, Kanhaiyalal, Jeevan, Dhoomal, Helen, Mumtaz Begum, Heeralal, and Master Shahid. Ramanand Sagar, the director of this film, has been active in the Hindi cinema as a story and dialogue writer since the early 1950s. He directed his first film in 1953 (Mehmaan), but it was in 1960 that he really established himself as a director with the film Ghunghat. This was followed by Zindagi (1964) and Aarzoo (1965). He then established Sagar Arts International, his own production house an went on to produce and direct such famous hits like Aankhen (1968), Geet (1970), Lalkar (1972), Charas (1976), Prem Bandhan (1979) etc. Beyond all the film world creations, Ramanand Sagar is more famous for the TV serial Ramayan, which he created in 1987, whose success established him as a household name all over India.

Another one of those songs that must find its due place on this blog. This is a gem of a Talat rendition, that has been a favorite of mine since childhood. As I listened to it again today, I checked and realized it is not yet posted. And so here it is, a very melodious and hummable soft creation that simply steals into your heart.

Taansen (1943), a Ranjit Movietone productions, is rated as one of the major hit movies of Saigal Saab, right up there with Devdas, Yahudi Ki Ladki an Street Singer. True to the primary subject, this film is a musical bonanza of the first order. Directed by Jayant Desai, the film carried music compositions by the great Khemchand Prakash. There are 13 songs in this film, and the lyrics are shared between DN Madhok and Pt. Indra.

Sanam raah bhooley yahaan aate aate

Luteraa (1965) is a typical grade B action drama – a story of pirates and palaces and princesses. The main actors of this film are Dara Singh, Prithviraj Kapoor, Nishi, Helen, Hiralal, Jeevan, Maruti, Bela Bose and others. The storyline contains many threads, including brother separated in childhood, a scheming wazir in the palace who murders the king for the throne, the princess kidnapped, the pirates and what not. Given the star cast, this movie made a reasonably good impact on the box office in its time. But more than the star cast, it is the music of this movie that make it a memorable production. There are six remarkable songs by Lata, and a duet by Shamshad Begum and Kamal Barot. Of the six songs by Lata, four are dance numbers done extremely well, and the remaining two are romantic solos. The lyrics for this movie are written by Anand Bakshi, and the music is composed by Laxmikant Pyaarelal.
