When I was pointed into the right direction, i.e. JK Rowling and Harry Potter, then the mystery dissolved away, and the nickname ‘Peevesie’ came out in a better light. And after spending maybe an hour with her, the significance of the nickname also eased itself into my mind. In the Harry Potter series, Peeves is a poltergeist at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, since c. 993. Fond of mischief and chaos, he is known as the spirit of chaos around the school. And so, picking up from her favorite series of teenage adventures, the daughter of Peevesie’s Mom selected this nickname for herself. Hmmm. . . is it that the daughter of Peevesie’s Mom selected this nickname for herself and was then known as Peevesie, or is it that she picked this nickname and then her mom came to be known as Peevesie’s Mom – it is getting a little mixed up in the order in which the things may have happened.

A time was when KL Saigal was known as the foundation stone of New Theatres, and Kaanan Devi was known as the beauty and glamour. Also called as the nightingale of Bengal, was the most popular female singer of her era, and has left an indelible mark both in Hindi and Bengali cinema.
Remembering Kaanan Devi on the anniversary of her passing away (17th July).

Introducing Shekhar Gupta – one of the quieter albeit active voices on the blog. Over the past two years, I have been in email communication with him, on various topics related to film music and the blog. He comes across as an unpretentious and humble personality, that belies his stature and accomplishments. One can say, in some ways, it was a letdown. I mean my first meeting in person with Khyati Ben. We had been in email touch prior to that. I was in US, and had made plans to go down to Los Angeles and meet her. For identification purposes, she had sent me her photograph – a most dazzling blonde, with sharp features and attractive eyes, carrying a red rose. As per suggestions from Raja ji (who was also party to the email thread), I had been instructed to wear a trench coat, a felt hat, dark glasses and sporting a fake beard. And yes, also to carry a red rose. That would have been the identification to each other. Then, we had code words also defined for a more certain identification. On seeing the red rose in her hands, I was supposed to approach her and ask the question –“Aasmaan mein kitne sitaare hain?”. And she was supposed to reply with “hoshiyaar, khatre ke har taraf se ishaare hain”. That was how the introduction was planned.

It is generally seen in many cases, when the nature or misfortune or destiny, inflict a handicap on a person, then the same nature itself will nurtures another aspect, another ability of that person and bestow another sensory gift to the individual. In our own sphere of awareness, I am sure we have seen many examples of individuals having some very debilitating handicap, but it is a wonder of nature that we see such individuals excel in something, some activity, some accomplishment, some art that at time defies belief.

For the perceptive minds, it is ever so the experience that whenever we witness people who are considered consistent achievers, and accomplishments that are significantly impressive, then a little bit of probing behind the bright lights will reveal a whole amount of dedicated hard work behind the achievements. When we see an acrobat so effortlessly doing some wondrous acrobatics, one should not just stop at the amazement that the protagonist has made this difficult trick look very simple. We should also realize the importance of the fact that the same person spends maybe twelve to fourteen hours every day to practice the trick that is played out in a few minutes for the audience.

It is somewhat like the train approaching a station. I am very sure, all of us have had this experience, whenever we have gone to receive some body at the railway station, or gone to the station to start a train journey. There is a whole variety of actions and emotions we associate with this event. These days, the availability of mobile phones has made communicating much easier. But earlier it used to be different. One would start calling up the railway enquiry at least one hour before the expected arrival time. Connecting with that number and getting information used to be a trying task in itself. Then based on the information so received, one would plan to go to the station, depending on the distance. And we are all familiar with the pedantic and meticulous souls who would start this enquiry many hours in advance.

The mention of this name brings to mind, the mindless sidelining and disregard of talent that was ever the most gifted and capable. But that is life – the unfortunate unkindness it metes out to some people is beyond our intelligence to understand. Comes to mind the lines of Meera Bai’s bhajan –

“Saanwari Surat Mann Bhai Re Piya” – the timeless melody that brings together Madan Mohan the music director and Lata Mangeshkar the singer, for the first time, in Devendra Goel’s second venture as a producer director. This was the second time that Madan Mohan was wielding the baton, his first offering being the music of “Aankhen” (1950), also produced and directed by Devendra Goel. It is interesting to note that Lata ji did not sing in Madan Mohan’s first film, despite the fact that a couple of years earlier, in 1948, Madan ji had requested Lata ji to make a promise to sing in his debut film, if he becomes a music director. Lata ji did not keep the promise for “Aankhen” the first film, but kept the promise for “Adaa” the second one, and thereafter, kept the promise for all the years and all the films that Madan ji composed for.
