In Hindi movies of the golden era, there was this common enough situation where the lead pair would carry out their romantic pursuits silently without even talking, and obviously without even singing a song. So what would happen in such circumstances ? Very conveniently, a two to three persons troupe would appear on the road (one carrying a harmonium- compulsory, other carrying a dholak-optional, but desirable, and a female dancer- highly desirable, but often optional)and they would sing a song, and the words of the songs would express the feelings of the shy duo.

No better words to express the exuberance and the playfulness of a liberated spirit. A poet’s dream and life’s illustration in reality, all anxieties and caution thrown to the winds and the desires to live the life the way it should be. I request my knowledgeable readers to help clarify this confusion of music directors.

A wonderful “searching-for-a-lost-one” song. The movie is Chaalis Din (1959) with a reasonably good set of actors, i.e. Premnath, Shakeela, Nishi, KN Singh, Maruti, Shammi, Chaman Puri, Kuckoo etc. This particular song is picturized on Shakeela as the main singer on screen, supported by Shammi and Maruti. Maruti looks very different and somber, unlike his comical sidekick roles that he has played in many movies of Dara Singh, Sheikh Mukhtar etc.
