I some how reach a Majrooh Sultanpuri song very often. This one is a comic song in the film Maaya (1961). The music director for this film is Salil Chaudhary and it is written by Majrooh. Mohammad Rafi is singing this solo song for Agha. Helen is also seen in the picturization. Agha and Helen are indulging in western style dance using props. Helen is brandishing a small purse and Agha has two props, a hat and a walking stick to dance with. They are also using some extra artist standing around, as ‘Ellora Ajanta Qutub Minar” and Dilli, Bombay and Calcutta.

In olden days, many relations were one sided relations in real as well as reel lives. For instance, it was a seller’s market then and the buyer had to be content with whatever he got. In education, teacher would teach and the pupils would listen. Pupils were discouraged from asking questions in case they had any doubts.

When one thinks of a bolt of lightning, it recreates in the mind the crackling sound of particles in the air subjected to currents of extremely high voltage, streaks of very very bright light zig-zagging across the sky, the rumbling sounds of thunder that follow the flash of light in a matter of few seconds. People who have witnessed bolts of lightning at very close quarters recount the intensity of both the sound and the flash of light. Sound of the crackling air, the sound of thunder, the blinding flash, and the rush of moving air at very close quarters. Whether from a distance, or a close quarters, this display of light and sound and movement is a gripping experience, for those who have an appetite for it.

The film ‘Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain’ from 1965 is simply a treasure house of wonderful songs. And so it is, given that the lyrics are coming from the pen of Majrooh Sb and the music is created by Khayyaam Sb, the genius of the understated melody who has remained always by the banks of the mainstream. Whatever may be the film, his creations are simply fantastic.

As I had mentioned in my post the day before, more news and information to share. Let me start by telling about the visitors we had in Delhi during the last four, five weeks. The first to come was Dr. M L Kapoor, from Suffolk, Virginia in the US. Dr. Kapoor is an avid lover of old Hindi films and film music. He is a diehard fan of Pankaj Mullick and Naushad. He has two cars, and the number plates of the cars carry the words ‘NAUSHAD’ and ‘PMULICK’. He is one of the guiding spirits behind the websites on KL Saigal, Pankaj Mullick and KC Dey. He is a doctor of internal medicine, now retired. His main area of interest is the films from New Theatres.

This blog has more than one hundred “Helen” songs. In these songs, Helen would typically perform a cabarat dance and the hero would be seated on a table in the bar where this dance is being performed. I recently begin to wonder whether one can count the number of heroes who figure in such picturisations. I can recall many names right from Ashok Kumar (Howrah Bridge-1958) to Amitabh Bachchan (several movies). Then I reminded myself that Helen had started her cabarat dancing career in 1950s when the three big heroes were Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dec Anand.
