What a find!! Bless this YouTube, and all the scattered music lovers all over the globe. Somewhere, someone is holding on to some fabulous music and then voila, it appears on the net. A song I have been searching for a long time. I am sure it happens with others also; it starts with the thought – there is something one is missing. At times it will pass through the mind, and then get folded under some other thoughts. When I log in online, there are so many other things to look for, that are the significant need for the current series of posts, that this one (and many other such things) do not readily jump to the front line. And then one day, I am searching for something else, when I bump into this one thing, completely out of the blue, and the only expression I can manage at the moment is “O My God”.

Ek Raat (1967) is a B/C grade film produced under the banner of East and West Movietone, Bombay, and is directed by Rajnath. The music for this film is composed by Usha Khanna. The lyrics for this film are written by three poets viz., Anjaan, Yogesh, and Jalaal Malihabaadi. The star cast is made up of Sheikh Mukhtar, Ravi Kumar, Simi, Shyama, Madan Puri, David, Helen, Lakshmichhaaya, Samson, Haroon, Bhagwan Sinha, Nazir Kashmiri, CL Shah, Bihari, Vasanti. This film was the debut vehicle for actor Ravi Kumar. The name does not sound familiar from other films, and I would request our knowledgeable readers to add more information about this actor.

The last time when I discussed songs composed by Ganesh,I had discussed almost all the Ganesh compositions that were they available. As things stand, this blog has as many as 31 songs composed by Ganesh. It may not look like much, but when one realises that Ganesh only composed 80 odd songs in his career, this figure is a lot !

I had mentioned in an earlier discussion that Helen’s aspirations (if any) of playing mainstream rolers in Hindi movies (where mainstream roles means donning a sari /salwar kurta etc and singing songs that are the preserve of leading ladies) were realised on movies like “Cha Cha Cha” (1964) and “Lahu Ke Do Rang” (1979). She in fact won the Filmfare award for best supporting actress too, for her role in “Lahu Ke Do Rang” (1979).

When one thinks of Helen, one thinks of a cabarat song(typically sung by Asha Bhonsle) where Helen, suitably under dressed by Indian standards, performs her dance and then bows out, playing no further part in the movie. There are many Helen fans though who would like to see her in meatier roles in these movies.

“Cha Cha Cha” (1964) is Bhavdeep Films production. It was produced and Directed by Chandrashekhar. He was also the hero of this movie. He had signed up Helen to play the heroine opposite him. So this movie was one of the rare occasions when Helen was not a one song wonder but got to sing lots of songs and got to act in a Bhartiya Naari kind of role.

“Ustaadon Ke Ustaad” (1963) was produced by an ambitiously named Production house called Films & Televisions, seeing that there used to be hardly any network of Television in India those days. Thnkfully, they at least produced Films, if not TVs or TV Serials. “Ustaadon Ke Ustaad” (1963) , which was directed by Brij, had Ashok Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, Shakila, Anwar, Sheikh Mukhtar, Amar, Shakeela Banu Bhopali, Helen, Johnny Walker etc in it.

“Raat Andheri Thhi” (1967) is a B grade movie about which very little is known these days. Theinformation that I have been able to gather about this movie tells me that this movie had Feroz Khan, Sheikh Mukhtar, Lolita Chaterjee & Helen in it, which makes it an archtypical B grade movie of the 1960s. These movies had Sheikh Mukhtraa playing the same kind of roles that would later be played by amitabh Bachchan in this angrey young man movies. Sheikh Mukhtar would use his bulky figure for strongarm tactics, and he would leave the task of singing and dancing to the chocolate faced side hero of the movie, which happens to be Feroz Khan in this movie.
