When I look back at the predominant themes used in Hindi movies at various periods of time, I find that the stories in the movies tended to reflect the prevailing mood of the population at large. For instance, things were tough for county in the earlier years and the country was dependent on others for everything, including even foodstuff. No wonder that people suffered from low self esteem. Under such circumstances, movies showing the sufferings of lead actors struck a sympathetic chord among general population and would throng to watch such movies. So it is no wonder that movies dealing with sad and tragic stories were made in good numbers.

Today (4 january 2014) is the 21st death anniversary of R D Burman (27 june 1939- 4 january 1994). He was only 53 years of age at that time, and it was unimaginable to realise that he was without work for several years during the last years of his life- and that too in an industry where he redifined the kind of music that would become the norm and an industry where he ruled the roost for well over a decade !

Everywhere we see people are doing a recap or recount of all the things that occurred in the last year. There are people who are doing count down of the songs that released in the year. There are others who are posting photos of the year that was, on the friendly social networking sites. Nowhere other than in love, is the weight felt more heavily of sarcasm of that age old phrase – “promises are meant to be broken”. After the flowers and dreams, the sun and the stars, it is inevitable that the reality checks in. The reality of life that is – the reality of relations, the reality of social variances, the reality of the difficulties of life that will incessantly continue to overwhelm, and above all the realities of personalities. More often than not, it is the personal motivations, personal desires and dogmas, personal fancies and choices, that manifest as roadblocks and potholes on the road to satisfied love. Those who are not well adept at managing and driving around these obstacles, more often than not, find themselves in the wells of misery.

This movie was produced by Raj Kapoor and directed by Amar Kumar for R K Films. The movie had Romi, Motilal, Sulochana Latkar, Yakub, Anwar Hussain, Nand Kishore, Jagdeep, Brij Sharma, C.S.Dubey, Shivaji Rathore, Manohar Gir,Om Prakash, Mohan Choti, Suraj Prakash, Baby Chand aka Nazima, Amjad(later to become the famous villain Amjad Khan), Pappu, Ghansham, Ram Kumar, Tillu, Chandan Mukherji with Guest Artistes viz Iftikhar,Hari Shivdasani,Budo Adwani,Nana Palsikar,Bhupendra Kapur etc. in it.

Today (6 december 2014) is the fifth death anniversary of Bina Rai (4 June 1931- 6 December 2009). Here is a song from “Durgesh Nandini”(1956) on this occasion. This song is sung by Lata. The song is lip synced by Bina Rai whereaas a group of female dancers are seen performing a dance. Sheila Machandra is one of dancers that can be identified.

When I started this series, I thought it would be an easy task to pick up these forgotten songs one by one for posting. However, after three posts I now realise that, with so many of the Pancham gems not posted here, it is quite a difficult task. After pondering on the task for some time, the solution, which was always logical, was staring at me right in the face. Go alphabetically!!
