Munawwar Sultana – 96th Birth Anniversary on 08/11/2020
The name Munawwar means, shining brightly or aglow. Combined with Sultana, it becomes “an empress who shone with a bright light”. Munawwar Sultana was born on 8th November, 1924 at Lahore, she had a compact but meaningful career from 1941 to 1956 of working in 28 films. After this she settled down to married life and devoted her-self to raising her family. She expired at the age of 82 on 15th September 2007.

Recently I have written a few posts for songs of films Laila Majnu(1945) and Laila Majnu(1953). In the past also, now that I checked, I have written posts for 5 songs of Laila Majnu(1976).
Ab agar hamse khudaayi bhi khafa ho jaaye
Barbaad e muhabbat ki dua saath liye jaa
Is reshmi paazeb ki jhankaar ke sadqe
Likh kar tera naam zameen par
Ye deewaane ki zidd hai
I have revisited the above posts, just to confirm if I have written my real thoughts on these legends of undying love, which end in tragedy and death. Obviously this sort of love is also unfruitful. The romanticism and glorification of this type of folk love stories and legends has no basis in truth or even historical facts.

Today (4 November 2020) is the 91st birth anniversary of Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal (4 November 1929 – 12 September 1971), one half of the legendary Shankar Jaikishan musical duo. The golden era of HFM started in 1949. Shankar Jaikishan were there right from the beginning. They ruled the roost in HFM for two decades. After that, the duo got separated in unfortunate circumstances, with the untimely death of Jaikishan at the the age of just 41. It is unbelievable but true that he had started at the age of 19 and he had achieved so much by the time he was 41 that the body of his work has gone on the become some of the best and immortal music that the golden era of HFM had given us.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part VI: Year 1952
———————————————————————————————————
I had mentioned that Lata Mangeshkar reached the peak of her HFM singing career in 1951 (statistically that is) in the sense that she sang as many as 223 songs in movies released in 1951. She would never be able to exceed this tally in future, though she came close to this figure in future years on a few occasions.

I wonder why Guru Dutt (09/07/1925 – 10/10/1964) who till 1958, had acted in lead roles in films of his own banner only, decided to act in films outside his banner. His first film outside his banner in a lead role was ’12 O Clock’ (1958) followed by ‘Sautela Bhai’ (1962), ‘Bharosa’ (1963), ‘Bahurani’ (1963), ‘Suhaagan’ (1964) and ‘Saanjh Aur Savera’ (1964). While his first film outside his banner as a lead actor may be an aberration, some of his later films as an actor outside his banner may probably have been out of financial compulsion following the box office failure of his film ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’ (1959).
