A very Happy MAHASHIVRATRI to all our readers.

On this auspicious occasion, I am presenting a Shiv bhajan from the film Swami Vivekanand-1955.

There were two Hindi movies made on Swami ji. One was made and released in 1955 and the other was made in 1994 (released in 1998). There was also the movie The Light : Swami Vivekanand in 2013. It was made in Hindi, Bangla, Tamil and English. There were movies in Telugu and of course in Bangla also. Today’s film was made by Amar Mullick Production. It was produced by actress Bharati Devi (Amar Mullick’s wife) and Phani Mullick (Amar’s brother). The film was directed by Amar Mullick himself. The film was made simultaneously in Bangla and Hindi. All artistes were from Bengal. The Music Director was Rai Chand Boral.

Today’s song is from the film Durga-1939, a film made by the prestigious Bombay Talkies. The film was directed by the studio’s German Director – Franz Osten. Some readers may wonder, how a German could direct a Hindi film, without knowing or understanding the language ? For such readers, let me tell you that Franz Osten directed not just 1 or 2 but a total of 16 films for Bombay Talkies, from its beginning. Till the end, he never learnt Hindi language ! He was not the lone German , but there was a whole team of Germans who worked in Bombay Talkies !

However, this song ‘kaun tujhe samjhaaye moorakh’ appears in two parts and since both the parts of this song are covered, we can conclude that seven songs of this movie are already covered on the blog.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part V: Year 1951

This series began in a small way because Lata Mangeshkar had sung very few songs in her earlier years -only nine songs in first two years and 50 songs in the third year.

From her fourth year, viz 1949, Lata Mangeshkar was on her own. She sang 153 songs in 1949 and established her as the new female playback singing sensation of HFM. The next year viz 1950 saw her singing 143 songs.

Now we come to her next decade, viz the decade of 1950s. The first year of the decade, viz 1951 saw Lata Mangeshkar singing as many as 223 songs for Hindi movies that were released in this calender year. This is the highest number of songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in movies released in a calender year. So statistically Lata Mangeshkar touched the peak of her playback career in 1951.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 34

The rate of posting of songs in the blog ten years ago was quite similar to the present day rate of posting, even though things were obviously much different in 2010 than what they are now. This day ten years ago (6 june 2010) was a Sunday, when the final of French open tennis tournament was played and Rafael Nadal won his fifth French open title defeating Robin Söderling of Sweden in straight sets. Now a days, no sporting events are taking place.

I find it interesting to note that the world was suffering from the pandemic of Swine Flu between January 2009 till August 2010. But India was not affected as badly as we are today affected with Corona Virus. There was no lockdown of any kind those days, though night running of trains was suspended in Naxalite affected Orissa-Jharkhand-West Bengal region (SE Rly) those days after Maoist insurgents caused derailment of Jnaneshwari express on 28 may 2010. 148 passengers had died in this ghastly accident near Jhargram.
