Kaanchi re Kaanchi re

The songs of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” (1971) were big rage during their time. One song that was a huge hit with kids like me was this song “Kaanchaa re Kaanchaa re”. Overnight, people with Nepali features began to be called Kaanchaa (males) and Kaanchi (females) respectively. One of my acquaintence kid sang this song “Kaanchi re Kaanchi re” addressed to a Nepali girl,hoping to eve tease her, but the girl, instead of feeling offended, sang back “Kaanchaa re Kaanchaa re” to him. 😉

Dara Singh, who was a legend among Indians of 1960s and 1970s became a fairly well known actor in Bollywood movies too. Most of his movies were C grade stuff, scoffed at by the “purists”, but his movies must have been profitable, considering that movies featuring Dara Singh continued to get produced. IN fact, Dara Singh himself produced many of his own movies.

There are so many modes of transportation in India viz foot, bullock cart, tonga, car, bus, trains,etc. And Bollywood movies have songs picturised on all these modes of transportation. In fact, Bollywood movies have songs on some unusual modes of transportations as well. For example, there have been songs where hero is seen riding an elephant and singing away.

It has been pointed out to me that this song was missing from this blog. In fact there are so many nice songs that are yet to be posted, and it will take time before I am able to do justice to all these songs. “Opera House” (1961) , which is a forgotten movie, starred Ajit and B Saroja Devi in lead roles. Since the movie was a B grade movie, its songs did not have the opportunity to get popular because not too many people got to listen to them.

This song “ghareeb jaan ke na tum haman mita dena” from “Chhoomantar” (1956) is one song from this movie that is well known to me for the last thirty years. This song is one of those songs that I had noted down in my diary of 1970s in which I used to note down the songs that I liked those days.
