“Taqdeer” (1967) was a Rajshree Productions movie about a family that gets separated from its sole breadwinner (Bharat Bhushan) and lives without him. Bharat Bhushan, presumed dead comes back many years later and finds himself a stranger in his own home. It was a moving tale which was nicelty picturised. The songs of this movie captured the essense of the movie wonderfully well.

Ae dard e jigar fariyaad na kar

I became aware of the movie when farmaish for a song of this movie was given by a reader some two years back. The reader had mentioned the movie as “Banu” which was a typo and as a result my search was delayed. Finally I located the song. Being able to home in on this elusive song gave me tremendous satisfaction. That song was the first song from this movie to be posted in this blog. Subsequently I have discussed two more songs from this movie.

I have often mentioned it that lyrics are the soul of songs. One of the main reasons why the songs of the golden era went on to become timeless classics was that great importance was given to lyrics of the songs. There have been instances when the music directors patiently waited for the lyricist to come up with the lyrics of the song.

When one is disturbed, there is nothing like a soothing bhajan to calm one’s nerves. The music and the singing of the bhajan has a calming influence on the mind, and the philosophical content of the lyrics makes us see things in perspective. Bhajans make us realise that living creatures (including humans) are mortals and we are mere puppets in the grand scheme of things. Things are not supposed to work out according to our wishes, so we should better reconcile ourselves with whatever is in store for us.

Among all the movies based on the story of “Devdas”,”Devdas”(1955) is arguably the most memorable one in all respects, and unarguably so as far as its music is comcerned. The musical team of this movie, as well as the team on whom the songs were picturised cannot be replicated again.
