“Aadmi aur Insaan” (1969) was a movie with Ravi’s music. This information is enough to conclude that the movie must be full of nice songs. And that is how it turns out to be.

Manoj Kumar was a movie maker who would make movies with simplistic messages telling India was good, west was bad ( Purab aur paschim), Villagers were good, city folks were bad ( Upkaar ) etc. In this connection, here is this movie “Yaadgaar” (1970) where Manoj Kumar continues to shove his ideals down the throats of public.

If one watched a bollywood movie in 1960s and 1970s, one was sure to have a Helen dance accompanied by a song. “Aadmi aur insaan” (1969) had Ravi’s music. When I looked at the list of songs that I have posted from this movie, I found that I had posted just one song, and that too a “lesser” known one. Knowing Ravi, he creates a bagful of hit songs in every movie where he is the music director, many of which have gone on to become iconic songs.

O P Nayyar, a headstrong music director who ruled the roost for much of 1950s tended to alienate people even close to him. By the time he was creating the music of “Kismat”, he was not on speaking tems with Rafi and so he used the voice of Mahendra Kapoor in the songs of “Kismat”. Mahendra Kapoor was required to sing Rafi style, and he did a competent job of it.

Ravi, one of the most prolific music directors who tended to give hits in a clutch did not believe in lifing tunes, though he admitted to being inspired from songs that he had heard. And he would change the tunes of his inspiration so nicely that few people could guess the source of his inspiration.

I am surprised to see that as many as two memorable Holi songs are from 1980s. But when I look at the credentials of the lyricists and the music directors of these songs, I realise that they were very much throwbacks of the past, and so one should not necessarily be surprised that they came with such evergreen songs on the wrong side of the golden era of Bollywood music.
