During 1960s and 1970s, the quality of public involvement with movies and music tended to be of a higher level than what it is now. Movie magazines those days used to give reports on the progress of movies that were under production. Once the movies were released, magazines would give a summary of the story of the movies as well as their reviews. Not just that, books would be published that would give the detailed screenplay of movies.

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
As I browse through my collection, through the YouTube, and through the Geet Kosh, I have jotted down a fairly long list of films that are still waiting in the wings to find an entry on this blog. Rather, these films carry songs that may not be all obscure, they have been popular, or at least played often on the radio, and are in the public memory. But the information about their creators, and the films to which these belong is not easy to relate.

The fact that this “Amaanat”, starring Manoj Kumar and Sadhana was described as a 1977 release always intrigued me and many others since the songs of this movie were popular from much earlier. The timeless classic song, viz. Matlab nikal gaya hai to pahchaante nahin is from this movie and I recall hearing this song since my pre teen years i.e. right from early 1970s if not earlier.

I became aware of the movie when farmaish for a song of this movie was given by a reader some two years back. The reader had mentioned the movie as “Banu” which was a typo and as a result my search was delayed. Finally I located the song. Being able to home in on this elusive song gave me tremendous satisfaction. That song was the first song from this movie to be posted in this blog. Subsequently I have discussed two more songs from this movie.

One of the main reasons why the songs of the golden era went on to become timeless classics was that great importance was given to lyrics of the songs. There have been instances when the music directors patiently waited for the lyricist to come up with the lyrics of the song.
