Hindi movie Music basically has three major fields, namely singing, lyrics writing and music composition. All these are specialised fields. People who are good in two of these fields can be called musical all rounders.

That way Hemant Kumar was a true musical all rounder. He can be described as a great in music composition as well in playback singing. And that is reflected in this blog too where Hemant Kumar has completed his century of songs as a music director and as a playback singer both. To this date, he is the only artist in the blog to have done so.

I had heard popular songs from ‘Kismet’ (1943) in my childhood. But it took another two decades for me to know that Anil Biswas composed those immortal songs. It was during one of the sittings in my friend’s house sometime in early 70s when I listened for the first time a song from ‘Taraana’ ( 1951)- seene me sulagte hain armaan that I came to know of him as music director. Subsequently,I heard many of his songs from films of 40s and 50s and I started liking those songs. It took me another four decades to know about Anil Biswas’s detailed profile and filmography by which time I realised that he was an institution by himself.

Among the ‘forgotten’ music directors of the golden era, Snehal Bhatkar is remembered for his immortal song kabhi tanhaayion mein yoon hamaari yaad aayegi. In my case, I remember him for an additional reason. Somehow I felt that he had an unique personality. I am not a face reader 🙂 but when I saw Snehal Bhatkar for the first time on TV some time in 90s (on one of the Marathi channels) he appeared to be to be a self contented man. He was in the TV programme to witness the renditions of some of his popular filmy and non-filmy songs by some young and budding singers. Sitting in the front row with his trade mark white Gandhi cap, he was enjoying the rendition of his songs without any nostalgic reactions on his face. Whenever I see his photographs – old as well as new ones, I get the same impression of a contented man.

Most mujra songs in Hindi movies are rather “light” in nature in the sense that the clients as well as the mujra performers seem to be at ease with themselves. In reality, performing mujra as well as going to kotha to watch these performances was regarded as disreputable acts.

In around mid-50s, I used to often hear a song ‘chal chal re musaafir chal’ and I liked it. But I had no idea or rather I never ventured to know as to which film this song belonged. It was sometime in early 70s when I came across an used 78 RPM record of this song that I became aware of the film’s name and other details. The film was POOJA (1954) and it was a kind of surprise to me that the film which had Shanker-Jaikishan as music director had become an obscure film. No doubt, this film is yet to make a debut in this blog. Recently, I heard some more songs from this film on the internet. What a treasure of songs the film had.

As I browse through my collection, through the YouTube, and through the Geet Kosh, I have jotted down a fairly long list of films that are still waiting in the wings to find an entry on this blog. And they satisfy two very important criteria that are kind of a thumb rule here. Most of these films are rare and obscure, and more importantly, they have music and songs that are just superb. Rather, these films carry songs that may not be all obscure, they have been popular, or at least played often on the radio, and are in the public memory. But the information about their creators, and the films to which these belong is not easy to relate.
