There was a time in my life when I thought no end about myself. Regarding bollywood movies of course. Then the bubble burst when I came across this blog a few little years back. Well the situation was that my Peevesie going through some songs which Atul had posted back then, and I fumbled on the tune even if the title of the song seemed familiar. Much like what happened a while back when Sudhir ji posted a song from the film ‘Wahaan Ke Log’ from 1967. The lead line in the song is “Hum Tujhse Mohabbat Kar Ke Sanam“. And I promptly said “Rote Bhi Rahe Haste Bhi Rahe” as the cross line. Only to discover a different and a (relatively) new song. (It is a different matter that my devar feels that I know all the bollywood songs recorded ever. HAHA!!)

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 24

MEENA (1944) appears to be an obscure movie at least to me as I had never heard nor came across the name of this film until I found a multiple version song from the film a few days back. The film was produced under the banner of Bharat Pictures and was directed by Phani Majumdar. The star cast included Hansa Wadkar, Vasanti, Master Shashi Kapoor (Sr.), Dixit, Gulab, Ratan Piya, Anand etc. There were 7 songs (including a multiple version) in the film, all penned by Pandit Phani which were set to music by Hari Prasanna Das.

‘Do Music Directors direct the music?’
This is the title of an article appeared about 72 years ago in June 1943 issue of FILMINDIA magazine. I had read the title of the article more than a year back but did not go through it at that time thinking that it must have been written by some staff of the magazine. Recently, when I came across the same article, I was surprised to find that the article was written by Ramchandra Pal, the music director who has composed music for Bombay Talkies films like ‘Kangan’ (1939), ‘Bandhan’ (1940), ‘Punar Milan’ (1940), ‘Naya Sansar’ (1941) and many more films in other banners mainly in the 40s. The article is well written.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 31
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Memories may be of joy, or they may be of melancholy. But memories are always very dear to the heart. Always. For the memories carry segments of our own past, our experiences, and the times that we have traveled through. If we could control time, life would have no place for memories. If we could navigate the time, as we navigate the space, then we could, at will, return to the past moments and relive them, as we desired. But no, the time is not in our control. We are, in turn, tied to an ever forward-progressing passage of time, where the moments once passed, can never be revisited. And so, the Designer of this universe, invented the artifact of memory, placed it in our brains, and linked it to our hearts and minds. And so, we remember.

Sureeli Suman – 10
————————
Original HMV of EMI group, when purchased by the Goenka Group, was called RPG. Later on in 2000, this major music producing company was aptly named as ‘Saregama’. During earlier years, it used to sponsor great artists to produce many non-film music albums. Later-on, under the false pretext of changing music trend, but mainly due to commercial considerations, such publications along with classical music albums ware slowly reduced to very near zero.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 8

‘ओ’
“ओ ओ ओ गोरी लाखों जनम से”
Yet one more truly vintage Rafi, if ever there was one. The songs by him simply do not cease to wonder the mind, such is the quality of expression and the depth of a seasoned rendition. The measured deliberateness of singing underscores the mastery of the singer on perfectly realizing the nuances of the emotions involved. Yes, truly vintage Rafi.

There have been Hindi movies on the theme of actual wars fought by Indian Defence forces post independence, with semi fictional narratives woven around those wars. The first one that left lasting impact was Chetan Anand’s “ Haqeeqat”, based on 1962 Indo- China war.
In this movie theere was a very touching Mohammad Rafi song Main ye soch kar uske dar se uthaa thaa that brought out the trauma of soldiers living far away from their beloved.
