The haunting image of a worn-out, white bearded face, with lines of age alluding to maybe a century of anguish, haltingly climbing down the service staircase in the deserted studio, wanting to reach the chair with ‘Director’ imprinted on its back. Or the vision of a decrepit man standing in the theatre doorway, his hands out flung across the entrance, and the sharp lighting from behind giving an impression of a phoenix rising from the ashes. These two celluloid illustrations are probably two of a handful of very gripping, compelling and spellbinding images that have left a lasting imprint on the minds of the cinema viewers and more importantly, a telling statement that redefined the very cultural fabric of the society and of film making itself.

Here is another fun song from the film “Minister”. Two months ago the post another song “Aji Biwi ko ghar pe bitthla ke” from this film appeared in the blog. The song I am discussing now will be the third song from this film. This is a “telephone song” sung by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle. Music is by Madan Mohan and Lyricist is Rajendra Krishan. Unfortunately, I dont recognise the two actors who are lip synching this song. The song is funny enough, just like “mere piyaa gaye rangoon”. Bhagwaan Dada is seen only briefly during the song. Telephone songs have their own appeal as the the singers are required to be on the opposite ends of the line. But in this song, though it starts in a telephone booth and ends there too, the protagonists are singing it with each other and roaming around outdoors.

In old Hindi movies, especially those of 1950s and 1960s, we often see songs picturised on “Taanga”, also called “Tonga”, not to be confused with a country of this name. 🙂

“Taanga” was actually a mode of public transport in India those days. With time, Taanga has all but vanished as a mode of public transport in India. But they have not become extinct. One can still find them in some small towns of India. I have noticed them in small places in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh etc. In fact, one can see them in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra in UP. I recall that we (I, my wife and daughter) actually rode on a Taanga to go to Fatehpur Sikri a few years ago.

I dont know how it is that I am finding songs penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri again and again. The song which is under discussion is from the film “Ardhangini”. From the other songs posted here and seen on youtube it is seen that this film stars Meena Kumar and Raj Kumar, and from the title and songs I assume this to be similar type of social film like ‘Aarti”.
