Here is a song from “Basant Bahaar” (1956) that I may have heard in the past but without paying much attention. This time, when I got the lyrics of this song (sent by nahm), I paid close attention to the lyrics. While doing that , one cannot but help pay attention to the singing and the music as well. And while doing that, one realises that this song is an unparalled combination of sensational singing, superb lyrics and wonderful music.

There have been quite a few movies made on Raja Harishchandra, the mythological king regarded as the epitome of generosity in ancient scriptures. One of these movies was “Raja Harishchandra” (1952).

“Chhaliyaa” (1960) is a well known movie. In comparison, few people have heard of “Chhaliyaa” (1973). This movie had Navin Nischol, and an ageing Nanda, and the movie failed to achieve any great success at the box office.

When the lyrics and details of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra,I thought that he must have made a mistake as I have definitely posted this well known Rafi song in the blog. On checking, I found that I had not discussed this song, rather I had discussed the other well known song from this movie sung by Mukesh (Main dhoondhta hoon jinko ).

“Mausam” (1975) is a movie that is known as much for the acting of Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore as for its music. Unfortunately Madan Mohan, the music director of the movie was not alive to see the success of this movie. For much of his life, movies embellished by his wonderful songs would bite the dust as the box office, and ironically, the movies released after his death, viz “Mausam” (1975) and “Laila Majnu” (1976) turned out to be hit movies riding on the music of these movies.

“Bikhhre Moti” (1951) is a movie I have little idea about. But I have gathered that this movie had actors like Jeevan, Neelam, Kamini Kaushal, Nigar, Jayant, Ranjana, Sherry etc in it. From the movie title, the movie appears to be a tear jerker movie.

As bicycle songs go, this must be the ultimate bicycle song. In this song, people ,led by Johny Walker, are riding bicycles and going in a procession singing this song. I have not watched the movie, but what I can deduce from the picturisation and the lyrics is that they are raising their voices against a person in authority who is using his public office for personal gains. So such things happened in those days also. 🙂

This is the typical Shammi Kapoor fun and exuberance solo. In many of his successful movies, one will find a solo song, sung by Rafi, almost within the first 10 or 15 minutes of the movie, “Jawaanian Ye Mast Mast Bin Piye” from Tumsa Nahin Dekha, “Kisi Na Kisi Se Kabhi Na Kabhi” from Kashmir Ki Kali, “Dil Deke Dekho, Dil Deke Dekho” from Dil Deke Dekho, “Laal Chhadi Maidaan Khadi” from Jaanwar, “Aji Aisa Mauka Phir Kahaan Milega” from An Evening In Paris, and so on. It used to be like making a dynamic musical entry. 🙂 Such songs used to be the staple diet of pre teen boys like me. I would listen to a Shammi Kapoor song like this only once, and it would be committed to memory. And I used to be very much in demand at the family gatherings and birthday parties, to perform these songs. (Wow, I used to do that? What fun!!)
