The first time we hear of Khayyaam as a music director is in the 1951 film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’. In this film, he shares the honors of music composition with Bulo C Rani. But certainly, this is not his first film as a music director. He has been active in the industry since 1948, albeit has was using a different name. In 1947-48 when he came to Bombay looking for opportunities as a music director, some producers and friends suggested to him not to use his original name, and so he adopted a pseduonym – Sharma ji. Under this name he composed music for three films, before reverting to his original name with the film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’.

This film “Laal Quila” (1960) would have been forgotten but for the two immortal ghazals composed by S. N. Tripathi, and sung by Mohammed Rafi. These ghazal’s ‘lagtaa nahin hai dil meraa ujde dayaar mein’ and ‘na kisi ki aankh ka noor hoon na kisi ke dil ka qaraar hoon ‘ have a place in the hearts of urdu poetry readers be they lay person or scholors.

It would be an injustice to call Om Prakash just a comedian. Although that is the performance for which he is most famous. In a career that spans almost six decades (from mid 40s to early 90s), Om Prakash has acted in more than 300 films. And yes, most of them in comic roles. But what sets him apart from the regular crop of comedy actors on the Hindi screen, is his
ability to handle serious roles as a character artist. His portrayals in films like ‘Khandaan’ (1965), ‘Gopi’ (1970), ‘Buddha Mil Gayaa’ (1971) and ‘Annadaata’ (1973) are serious characterizations that stand on par with the leading artists of his time.
