Today’s song is from the film Roop Kahani-50, a bi-lingual film( Roop katha-50 in Bangla), made by New Theatres during their last years. It was probably after this film that they closed shop forever.

The film was directed by Souren Sen. Souren Sen was a product of New Theatre’s policy of producing directors from within the company. Examples are Premankur Atorthy ( ex writer), Nitin Bose ( ex Editor) and Bimal Roy ( ex Editor). Souren Sen had started as an Art Director for film Desher Mati or Dharati mata-3 and followed it by films like Kashinath-43,Dui Purush-45, Milan-46, Desher Dabi-47, Nauka Dubi-47, Ramer Sumati-47, Manzoor-49 etc. He got a break as Director only in the last film of New Theatres Roop katha-50 Bangla and Roop kahani-50 Hindi version. Later he also directed one more film from Ashok Films, Calcutta- Chitrangada-54 in Bangla and Hindi. Thereafter he shifted to Bombay and he was an Art Director in Sahib bibi aur Ghulam-56, he did Shankar Narayan Bank-56 and Girls school-5 in Calcutta again. He did in Bombay Ek musafir ek haseena-62,Leader-64, Baharen phir bhi aayengi-66, Shikar-68 and Abhilasha-68.

The cast of the film was Ashita Bose, Asit Baran Mukherjee, Vijay Kumar, Tulsi Chakraborty, Zahar Roy and others. Music was by Pankaj Mullick.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet #
————————————

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Dukh Sukh-1974’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 11.11.1974. This seems to be an obscure movie of its time as I could not find any video of the movie or its’ songson internet or any information about this movie except in Geet Kosh Vol-V (1971-1980). The details about this movie as mentioned in the Geet Kosh-Vol-V are as given below. I had shared these details earlier while presenting a Rafi song from this movie,‘mere paas aao de do sahaaraa’.

When I presented the above song from this movie more than five years back, only couple of songs from this movie were available, whereas many more songs from this movie have now become available.

‘Dukh Sukh-1974’ was directed by Majid Maqbool for Nausheen Films, Bombay. This movie had Sandeep Kumar, Shreedevi (I am not aware if she is the same Sreedevi that we know), Chaand, Majid Maqbool, Farshori, Swaroop, Shams, Lalitashri, Jyoti, Chandermohan, Revati, Hafeez, Khan, Pritam, Vijaya and others. As per HFGK Vol – V (1971-1980) this movie had five songs written by Javed Qadri and composed to music by Vitthal-Mumtaz. Geet Kosh has left space indicating more songs might have been recorded for this movie. The singers for the five songs listed in Geet Kosh are Manna Dey, Shashilata Virk, Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, and Krishna Kalle.

Today’s song is one of the very few songs sung by the Music Director Anil Biswas. Today’s film is Bhookh-1947.

In olden days, there were 3 major film centres-Bombay, Lahore and Calcutta. After 1947, all the Hindi film activity at Lahore shifted to Bombay. By mid 50’s even Calcutta almost stopped making Hindi films. Many Hindi speaking artistes in various disciplines of film making shifted to Bombay and finally Bombay became the only and the main Hindi film making Centre.

Today’s song is from a non descript C grade stunt film, Namumkin aka Impossible – 1946.

1946 was an important year in the history of Hindi films. This was the period when the impending Independence of India was on the Anvil and everyone knew that in the year 1947 it would take place. At the same time when the country was to be divided on the basis of Religion and another muslim country Pakistan was to come into existence. Many of the muslims in the film industry were excitedly awaiting their departure from India to the Utopia. This would, naturally, create a lot of vacancies in every department of film making. However, there was enough talent available in the remaining India to fill up the void. Hence from the year 1946 itself there were several debutantes. This made the year 1946 an year of Debuts of several new actors, directors, MDs, Lyricists etc etc.

Today’s song is from a social film – Suhag-1958.

This was a film dubbed from its Tamil version titled “Tang Malai Ragsiyam”. There was a Kannada version too, titled ” Ratnagiri Rahasyam”. Both the South Indian films were made simultaneously in 1957. The Hindi version was made in 1958. I have not seen this film. All 3 versions were directed by B.R. aka Budagaru Ramakrishnaiah Panthulu. For him this was his DEBUT film as a Director. Not only him, but even his assistant Director – Puttanna Kanagal made his DEBUT in direction. Before direction, both were mere actors. Even in later years, they appeared in a few films as actors.

A few weeks back while going through Deepti Naval’s filmography on her Website, I found the mention of one of her films, ‘Anant’. I have never heard of this film. I did not find the mention of this film on any regular film/song-based websites, like IMDb, myswar.in etc. Fortunately, a video clip of the film was available on one of the video sharing platforms which was uploaded by the producer of the film. I watched the film in one sitting and liked it immensely.

Anant (1999) was a tele film which was produced by Project Smita Society and Voluntary Health Association of India and was directed by Raman Kumar. The cast included Deepti Naval, Kanwaljeet Singh, Seema Biswas, Satyadev Dube, Bhakti, Javed Khan, Nanda and Avtar Gill. The story of the film was written by Alok Mukhopadhyay mainly to create an awareness about AIDS/HIV+ . Vinta Nanda wrote the screenplay and dialogues. The film was premiered on Star TV on December 1, 1999, on World Aids Day. Later, it was dubbed in nine languages for being telecast on the regional TV channels. The film was produced in mainstream cinema format with the focus on creating the awareness of AIDs for the people at large. The film is of 70 minutes’ duration.
