Most of of the present generation of music lovers may not remember Shiv Dayal Batish ( S D Batish), the classical musician, vocalist, playback singer and music director. During his filmy career in 40s and 50s, he composed music for 19 films (including 2 films with his pseudo name of Nirmal Kumar) and sang about 100 songs. His music compositions for Hindi films are generally labelled as Lahore style of Hindi film music which was used by Lahore based music directors like Pandit Amarnath, Pandit Govindram, Master Ghulam Haider, Shyam Sundar, Khurshid Anwar etc. S D Batish was the cousin of other Batish brothers – Pandit Amarnath, Husnlal and Bhagatram. It is said that originally, the family surname was ‘Vats’ ( or Wats) which became ‘Vatish’ and then to ‘Batish’.

I had played my 78 RPM record (No. N.52584) of the song ‘ajab hai daastaan teri ae zindagi’ from the film ‘Shararat’ (1959) umpteen times on my record player in my younger days. But it did not occurr to me at that time that there was something amiss about this song. It was much later I came to know that in this song, Mohammed Rafi had given playback for Kishore Kumar. .

This song is a long pending farmaish for this blog. This song is “Haseenon ki adaayen”, aka “haan ye bholi soorat waale” from “Chaar Din” (1949). This song has been giving me lots of troubles. For one, this song has not one , but two parts. And secondly, each of the part is supposed to have three singers each and as per credits, only one singer is repeated in the other part of the song. But I can clearly notice that these parts have more than three singers singing in them. Moreover, more than one common voice can be heard in both the versions.

Here is a rare song from an obscure movie that I heard for the first time only recently. Though the song is more than six decades old, it sounds so refreshing and timeless even today.
