Yesterday, just like that, I googled ‘nine thousand’. Did not expect to find anything really interesting and useful to write about. After all, it is just another number. But really, I was surprised. Today, the 13th of August, is the birthday of one of Hindi cinema’s big stars of the 1950s and 60s, Vyjanthimala.
If one were to go by her recorded year of birth as 1936, today is her 77th birthday. While recording this fact, I could not help observing that two other legends of the same period, Waheeda Rehman and Nutan, are also recorded as 1936 born. Somebody up there must have been in a liberal mood in 1936 to decide to send these three to Planet Earth in the same year!

“Do Kaliyaan” (1968) was an AVM productions movie. It was directed by Krishnan Panju. The movie had Biswajeet, Mala Sinha, Mehmood, Om Prakash, Lalita Pawar, Manorama, Nigar Sultana, Geetanjali, Hira Lal, Umesh Sharma, Bharati, Sujata, Shabnam, Baby Sonia(aka Neetu Singh) etc in it.

R D Burman in 1970s was mostly known for composing songs that dazzled the senses. But he could also compose songs that touched the heart strings of the listeners. He tended to create the later kind of songs when he tied up with Gulzar as a lyricist. That way R D Burman was somewhat similar to Kishore Kumar who was known to be a happy go lucky character most of the time but when he produced movies, then most of his movies (with the exception of “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”) were serious movies.
