In India, being a “gareeb” (poor) has often been equated to being good and nice. And likewise, being rich has been considered being bad and evil. So it is not uncommon to find Hindi movies, especially old ones, championing the cause of gareebs, the way Indian politicians champion their cause even today, instead of asking the basic question as to why gareebs should even exist in the first place.

I came across a veritable gem today, that I had once heard many many years ago; I had no info about this song, just remembered the tune and some words, that would sometimes just come up in my mind by themselves and I would hum them, always longing to hear this song again. And today, while searching for something else, I accidentally bumped into this old long lost friend of mine.

Sajjad Hussain, regarded as the only original music director of Hindi movies, was a temperamental genius who would brook no interference in his creative work and leave movies in a huff if he felt that his producers were interfering in his work. “Dilruba” (1950) has some awesome songs in it. In fact I have discussed as many as five songs from this movie. In fact I was so impressed with one song ( Dhak dhak karti chali jeewan ki rail re )of this movie that I had posted that as the 2000th song of this blog.

“Mirza Ghalib” (1954) is a movie based on the life of legendary Urdu Poet Mirza Ghalib. This movie had most of its songs based on Mirza Ghalib’s poems, so in effect, Ghalib himself is the lyricist of most songs of this movie, even though he had dead for some one hundred years by the time this movie was made.
