When I was growing us in late 1960s and 1970s, I was only aware of a few festivals when we had holidays. There were days like Holi, Deewaali, Raksha Bandhan,Durga Puja (Dashara), Id, Chrishmas etc. Then there were a few days thaat were known as days, viz Children’s day (Jawaharlal Nehru’s bithday), Teacher’s day (Radhakrishnan’s birthday) etc.

I have mentioned it in the past that I am quite absent minded when it comes to remembering important dates. There were occasions when I turned up at my work place, only to realise that it was a holiday. But more importantly, I tend to be absent minded about important dates of personal importance too, viz birthday of my spouse etc, which is never a good idea. Fortunately, my daughter, who always keeps track of such dates comes to my rescue.

Pancham, the name by which that Rahul Dev Burman was affectionately called, was a name that was given by his father, Sachin Dev Burman. Once in an interview, RDB had revealed why Sachin Da called him by this name. He says that when he was born, and when Sachin Da heard him cry for the first time, he found that the pitch at which the newborn was screaming was the fifth octave of the sargam. And that is how he came to be known as Pancham. (There are other anecdotes also, crediting Ashok Kumar with naming him so.)

Listening to the lines in this qawwaali, one can get a feeling that they are coming from the pen of Sahir Ludhianvi, such is the power and the style of messaging that his poetry ensconces. ‘Dharamputra’ (1961) is one of the best films I remember, on the theme of social integration, and the oneness of humanity. Coming from the banner of BR Films, Bombay and directed by Yash Chopra, who was a novice and a very young director way back then. After ‘Dhool Ka Phool’ (1959) this was only his second venture as a full director. And he had not yet seen his 30th birthday.

“Hum Log’ (1951) is a production from the banner of Ranjit Movietone, but more than that, it is a signature piece by Zia Sarhadi, who has written and directed this film. This film is one of the earlier examples of Neo-Realism in Indian Cinema, a school of cinematic expression that was pioneered in the west by directors such as Luis Bunuel (Spain), Vittorio DeSica (Italy), Luchino Visconti (Italy), Yasujiro Ozu (Japan) and Jean Renoir (France). Although the film did not have any commercial success, it still is considered as the cult classic in the genre of Neo-Realism in Indian Cinema.
