Jaganmoy Mitra – that is the name behind the voice of such incredible gems as “Ye Na Bataa Sakoonga Main, Dil Ko Hai Tum Se Pyaar Kyun”, “Aankhon Mein Basaa Mann Hai Mera, Mann Mein Basaa Kaun”, “Meri Aankhen Bani Deewaani” , “Sapnon Mein Mujhko Pyaar Milaa”, and so many more non-film and film songs, that will never fail to tickle the heart and move the listener to feel the emotion behind the words. For more than seven decades, the treasures of his voice have pleased discerning listener’s of many generations. A voice that always kept to classical and semi classical consistency, and then faded away from the mainline singing for films, around the mid 50s. Yet, his popularity has not waned. Limited maybe, the treasure of his singing gems, but his name evokes a pleasant attachment, whenever his songs are played.
Remembering Jagmohan ‘Sursagar’ on the anniversary of his birth today (6th September).

Remembering Motilal, a great artist and a peerless actor, who departed from this world on 17th June, 1965. A vivacious personality, so full of life and friendship all his life, he passed away friendless and penniless. Another sad commentary on the state of affairs of this industry.

A young Anil Biswas is preparing to record a song for a newly arrived Heroine-RATTAN BAI. She had come from Calcutta, after working in the big banner ” New Theatres”. Having worked in films like ‘Subah ka Sitara’ and Yahudi ki Ladki-1933, with the legendary singer Sehgal, her name had become famous already. She had also worked in Rooplekh-34 and karvaan-e-hayaat-35.

“Jaageerdaar” (1937) was directed by Mehboob Khan. The movie had Surendra, Bibbo (Ishrat Sultana), Motilal, Maya Bannerji, Yakoob, Zia Sarhadi, Pesi Patel, Bhudo Advani, Pande etc in it.

There are some old film and non-filmy songs of 30s and 40s which I was aware of during my childhood not because of the radio or later the internet but by words of mouth. I heard those songs from my parents, relatives and even some friends of our family. During my childhood, I was not very fond of those songs. Later, as a teenager, I had heard some of those songs on Radio Ceylon which gave me a sort of reminder that I had heard those songs earlier. I got 78 RPM records of a few of those songs mostly by accident during early 70s. Since then, I have developed a liking for those type of songs. Later, with the advent of internet, it was a ‘memory recall’ for me when I listened to most of these songs again.
