PARISTAAN (1944) was produced under the banner of N R Acharya Art and it was directed by Mahesh Kaul. The star cast included Pahadi Sanyal, Anjali Devi, Kamal Zamindar, Ranjeet Kumari, Sunalini Devi, Master Amritlal, Moni Chatterji, Padma Banerjee etc. From the title of the film, probably many people may guess that it was a film belonging to fantasy genre. But it turned out to be a slapstick comedy though the story by Vaju Kotak was not less than a fantasy.

Today (15 august 2016) is the 69th independence day of India.

With the passage of so much time, the general knowledge of younger generation about Indian freedom struggle and independence is no longer what it used to be in the past. ‘Basera’ (1950) was produced under the banner of Watan Pictures and was directed by Inaayat. The star cast included Ramola, Heeralal, Veena Kumari, Roopmala, Chandabai, Budho Advani etc. I have no idea about the film’s story but going by the songs, it is apparent that the film belonged to social genre.

The playback system came in to vogue some time in 1935 in Bombay film industry. The system really got stabilized only from early 40s. At that time,  among the female playback singers, Ameerbai Karnataki, Rajkumari, Zohrabai Ambaalewaali and Shamshad Begum dominated the Hindi film industry. There were other playback singers like Parul Ghosh, Zeenat Begum, Hamida Bano, Naseem Akhtar, Mohantara Talpade, Dilshad Begum etc. While a few among them had migrated to Pakistan, others  playback singers either could not stand against the competition with the well- established playback singers or they had to give up their careers, probably for domestic and personal reasons.

It is already the Hindu month of Shraavvan (Saawan) in North India and the month starts for the states south of Vindhya, from Wednesday, August 3rd 2016. But with heavy rains for the last two days, the hills around Sanjay Gandhi National Park (I stay close to the Park) turning green and the chirping of birds in the early morning in our society, I feel that I am already in the midst of Saawan.
