(Ameer Minai)

The above is the complete ghazal by Ameer Minai. The famous line “Jo chup rahegi zubaan e khanjar, lahu pukaregaa aasteen ka” is partly used in the last stanza of this song posted recently. Since the famous line is the crux of the matter, and full ghazal is the complete story, so given above as food for thought.

Today’ song is from an early film of Talat Mehmood – Samapti-1949.

Talat has sung some memorable songs. He worked in 3 films in Calcutta and 9 films in Bombay as an actor. Today’s film is his 3rd and last film done in Calcutta. His first film as an actor was Raj laxmi-1945, the second was Tum aur Hum-1947. For this film, he had taken a new name – Tapan Kumar. The reason, presumably, was that there was another actor with a similar name – Talaaq Mehmood, working in this film. To avoid any confusion, he probably took this name. During the period 1947 to 1949, he sang many Bangla NFS in the name of Tapan Kumar.

Today’s song was composed by Music Director Timir Baran Bhattacharya. It was directed by Amar Mullick and the star cast was Bharati Devi, Heeralal, Sunder, Talat mehmood and others. I have neither seen this film nor know of its story. The film had 8 songs. 2 Solos and 2 Duets of Talat and Puprabha Sarkar and 2 solos of Suprabha are mentioned in HFGK. 2 remaining songs do not show a singer’s name. The HFGK also mentioned the title of this film as Sampatti instead of Samapti. This was , however, corrected in subsequent editions.

Today’s song is from a Remake film from the south – Mangala-1950.

By 1950, it was just about 3 years after we got our Independence. Many talented and gifted artistes from Film industry – composers, actors, directors, lyricists and technical people, chose to leave India, which once was their Motherland, to start a new life in a new born country, their country! The vacuum created by their exit was soon filled up by the then current, and the upcoming and aspiring artists in India. For that point in the history of India cinema, I would list the following as upcoming and aspiring artists :

– Composers: Shankar-Jaikishan, SD Burman, Madan Mohan, Roshan, Khayyam etc.
– Lyricists: Shailendra, Hasrat Jaipuri, Shakeel Badayuni, Majrooh, Rajendra Krishan, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Sahir Ludhianvi etc.
– Singers: Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore, Talat, Manna Dey etc.
Female singers like Lata, Asha, Geeta etc filled up the void created by the departure of Noorjehan, Khursheed etc. And of course, many new actors and actresses also came up shining.

‘Daasi’ (1944) was produced under the banner of Pradhan Pictures and was directed by Hiren Bose. The cast included Najam-ul-Hasan and Ragini in the lead roles supported by Kalavati, Khairati, G N Butt, Charlie, Om Prakash, Gyani, Fazal Shah, Manzoor etc. The story of the film was written by Dalsukh Pancholi. I have strong reason to believe that Pradhan Pictures was Dalsukh Pancholi’s ‘ghost’ banner as I find his name on the Censor Certificate as applicant.

The film’s lead actor, Najam-ul-Hasan (in the credit title of the film, his name is spelled as Najam Hussain) became well known for an incidence while working in the Bombay Talkies film, ‘Jeevan Naiyya’ (1936) as a lead actor opposite Devika Rani, wife of Himanshu Rai, the founder of the Bombay Talkies. During the making of the film, Najam-ul-Hasan eloped with Devika Rani to Calcutta (Kolkata). While Devika Rani was convinced by Sashadhar Mukerjee to return to Bombay Talkies, Ashok Kumar who was working in the Bombay Talkies as a laboratory assistant got a chance to work as a lead actor opposite Devika Rani, replacing Najam-ul-Hasan.

Today’s song is one of the very few songs sung by the Music Director Anil Biswas. Today’s film is Bhookh-1947.

In olden days, there were 3 major film centres-Bombay, Lahore and Calcutta. After 1947, all the Hindi film activity at Lahore shifted to Bombay. By mid 50’s even Calcutta almost stopped making Hindi films. Many Hindi speaking artistes in various disciplines of film making shifted to Bombay and finally Bombay became the only and the main Hindi film making Centre.

Today’s song is from a non descript C grade stunt film, Namumkin aka Impossible – 1946.

1946 was an important year in the history of Hindi films. This was the period when the impending Independence of India was on the Anvil and everyone knew that in the year 1947 it would take place. At the same time when the country was to be divided on the basis of Religion and another muslim country Pakistan was to come into existence. Many of the muslims in the film industry were excitedly awaiting their departure from India to the Utopia. This would, naturally, create a lot of vacancies in every department of film making. However, there was enough talent available in the remaining India to fill up the void. Hence from the year 1946 itself there were several debutantes. This made the year 1946 an year of Debuts of several new actors, directors, MDs, Lyricists etc etc.

Today’s song is a duet from a Mythological milestone film – Bharat Milap-1942.

Mythological films have been an important part of Indian films for a long time and this was evident from the fact that there was hardly any production house that did not make a Mythological film. The period of 1940 to 1965 can be called an age of meaningful religious films. In this too, the 1950 to 1960 period was the peak period for this genre. Later on the production of such films dwindled and these days, of course, one has to make efforts to find such a film, with a large magnifying glass !

Madhubala-1950, A Ranjit Movietone film, directed by Prahlad Dutt had music by Pt.Lachhiram. The cast of the film was Madhubala, Dev Anand, Jeevan, Randhir, Manju, Ram Avatar and others.

We have been taught in our school that 2=2 is 4. But in life, sometimes 2+2 is also 22 like, when a Love marriage is by the willing consent of both the families, or getting a child after 10 years of marriage or when your son stands First and wins a Gold medal in his MBBS course, it is the 2+2=22 ! Similarly when ‘Rati’ and ‘Madan’ come together, it is 2+2=22 ! In our language, when the eternal beauty Madhubala pairs with the handsome, young Dev Anand it is 2+2=22 again.

In the film Madhubala-1950, when these two were paired, no wonder people were ecstatic and crowded the cinema halls. No one bothered if the story was weak or the music was third rate. These two were enough to please them. Here, of course the story was good and the music too !

Today’s song is from an obscure film – Uddhar-1949.

The film was made by Pratibha Chitra Mandir, Bombay. It was directed by S.S.Kulkarni (never heard this name !) and the music was provided by Vasant Desai. The cast of the film included Munawwar Sultana, Dev Anand, Nirupa Roy, Bharat Bhushan, Pratima Devi, D.S. Salvi, Narbada Shankar, Ram Singh, Ranjit Budhkar and others.

Today’s song is the last and final song from the film Ratnavali-1945.

The film was made by Amar Pictures, Bombay, owned by Chimanlal Desai, who was the owner of Sagar Movietone earlier. The films made by this company were generally directed by Virendra Desai, his son. The life story of Virendra Desai was very bad. While he was at the peak of his career, with a wife and 2 children, he fell in love with his Heroine – Nalini Jaywant, who was 15 years younger to him. After completing the film Adab Arz-1943, both of them eloped to Calcutta and got married there.
