The admirers of both Anil Biswas and Mohammed Rafi are intrigued by the fact that Anil Biswas collaborated with Mohammed Rafi for far less number of songs – probably 10 in numbers. One possible reason could be that when Mohammed Rafi ‘s career as a playback singer was picking up, Anil Biswas’s career had already reached the zenith. During this period, he had Mukesh and Talat Mehmood for playback singing who were preferred over Mohammed Rafi by most of the then lead actors like Dilip Kumar.

“Aap Ki Sewa Mein” (1947) was a Chandrma Pictures Production. It was directed by Vasant Joglekar. It had Dikshit, Kesri, Shantaarin, Saroj Borkar, Nimbaalkar, Samson, DR Gokhale, Bhaal Maraathe, Vijaya, Baby Nalini etc. This otherwise lesser known movie has gone down in the history of Hindi movies as the movie where Lata Mangeshkar made her debut as a playback singer with the song Paa laagoon kar joree re. Less well known is the fact that this movie was also the Hindi movie debut for music director Datta Davjekar who otherwise was a big name in Marathi movies as a music director at that time.

I was aware of four popular folklores of Punjab-Sind provinces which are now in Pakistan – Heer Ranjha, Mirza Sahiban, Sohni Mahiwal and Sassi Punnu. These are the tragic love stories in which the lovers die at the end. The common features of all these four folklores are (i) the female character is extremely beautiful, (ii) families of both the lovers resent their unions, (iii) female lovers are forced by their families to marry other man and (iv) at the end, female lovers die first followed by the male lovers except in case of Mirza Sahiban where the two lovers die in the reverse order.
